G Scale Central

H-J and I both suffered from a rather scathing view of folks who posted fifty-line reports of ‘the red box arrived on the front step and my heart was a-tremble as I carefully unboxed the box from the box it was in, savouring the green and white stripes, cunninlgy and carefully designed to draw the eye around to the flap, awaiting my trembling hands…’

Yup, I’ve got a bunch of LGB stuff - in fact, it started me off back in 1968 - but it’s for playing with, not worshipping.

I’m betting that we were binned at around the same time, when the female site owner decided that all this talk of ‘scale’ whatever that was, and ‘realism’, whatever THAT was, ran contrary to the aims of the forum.

You know, I’m actually amazed that anybody here - Vic and Jerry et al - has lasted so long without causing some kind of serious offence.

I’d offer my services as a moderator, but first I’d have to find a black suit with lightning bolt collar tags and a skull and crossbones hat badge.

Quite often it only took a simple question regarding the most glaring discrepancy of a newly unwrapped LGB product to get to read a variation of “I really don’t give a fig, it is simply beautiful”.
At the same time some of those “fanciers” were puzzled/offended by the harumphs and snickers of people in the smaller scales who had the nerve to point to a real model of the same item in a smaller scale. There was (and is) no winning on that score.

The bottom line here is that my original post pointed out a need for new members and moderators as Ross has pointed out. Thank you Ross, you are correct. I just carried it a bit further.

I do not see the things that some of you say, are going on at GSC. Things like criticism of other’s likes. I’ve seen constructive criticism if any. That’s the reason there are topic headings. If you’re not interested in that topic, move on.

No its someone who’s very clever with the written language

Noted Dan’s post on GSC so I thought I’d take a look over here. Been signed up for a while here but never posted till now. I think GSC is a great site so long as you treat it as a resource for general large scale model railway problem solving and techniques. The issues start when you see it as an extension of your therapist’s couch or start getting wrapped up in the factions that (inevitably ?) exist in this (or any) hobby. Max

P.S. Where do I go to introduce myself ?

I did! Twice! LOL I called the ritual opening “Red Box Porn” and found it very silly. I’m still there because when I start a post its strictly about modeling. I might use humor on other replies but I tend to tone it down a lot. Its not worth it to try and get a few laughs if a couple of folk get all bent over at the same time

well i like both,

but all forums i think have been quieter recently, it used to be great discussing what was going to be

made next and discussing the new products and there perceived faults,

i am not saying there both forums are dull, but a bit of the excitement has gone because of this

and there seems to be less scratchbuilding, although it seems it better on this site , also there seems to

be less new and second hand stock for sale, both on the forums and in general,

and there is definitely not enough pictures of naked women with lovely double headers,

I think you just did. Welcome Max! I too waited quite a while before posting here. I wanted to get to know the board and people before making the investment. I was disappointed that I had decided to move on from the other site I had been visiting and didn’t want to just come full circle to the same point on LSC. Well, I’m Very glad I started posting. Great people here and Bob cares about his site and keeps it great for us all. Hope to see more posts from you soon Max!

PS: If you would like to make an official Introduction post the general forum would be the best place.

Welcome Max…all the guys here, usually can be found wearing a smile, along with sense of humour…

I go on their from time to time. My biggest issue with forums today is too many topics to browse through especially on their. I mainly go on the live steam, photos, videos. I have been into the FB stuff more these days.

FB Groups are excellent for proto pictures and such - started one and subscribe to five more. Took me two starts and about a year on FB to keep all the “oh really” stuff off of the “Home” lineup. Adblock+ takes care of the rest.

Maybe I should join and post pics of my “red box” smashing and burning. I still have a few more to destroy.

But I don’t discriminate: I smash boxes of all colors.

I have been on the GSC forum since it began and on the GSCaleMad forum that preceded it.

It is fair to say that it has changed a fair bit over the last year in its essence and general feel (let alone the function and appearance upgrade).

The ‘red box opening’ scenario which was posted by some LGB worshippers in the past years has generally disappeared, which is a good thing as is the restraining of the LGB prothletising by a very small minority of the members.

The forum does have a good spread of scales and interests but obviously, with a large percentage of the membership being in the UK, there is a bias towards European and British running but that does not mean that us American or Australian outline guys do not have our say or post things of interest to US or Ozzie running

‘Coffee Shop’ is a useful place to have for general ‘banter’ stuff. If a member does not want to read about political, religious or other topic content, they can just not bother to read it.

Paul Spann, the owner of the GSC forum, has just posted (in thread on the GSC, which is a reply to this thread started on the LSC) that the GSC forum is much like going down the pub and talking with a bunch of mates.

I am pretty sure that everyone who has had a meeting of minds in a pub (or bar), realises that even if railways are the main topic, religion, politics, local events, personal matters etc etc will find their way in to the conversation.

I have to say that I have been at the brunt of one or two GSC idiots back in the day but have also taken idiots to task in the past (more than one of them was a forum moderator it has to said).

The forums, LSC and GSC (and also the ‘MyLargeScale’) have their pluses and their minuses.

But at the end of the day a forum succeeds not due to the owner/manger saying it will but it is solely due to its membership’s input and the work done by good impartial moderators.

And there are some of us who do have a sense of humour…and I mean a good sense of humour!

Very well said Mike. You and a few others are the reason why I go on GSC. Always admired your railway.

Well, I’VE just sent a few folks here a pic of MY latest attempt at scratch-building - an MoW caboose conversion on a spare AMS flat car.
