Large Scale Central

First Post

Hello; my name is Norman. You can tell by that name I’m an old frart. No sane mom has used that name for over 50 years. I am not new to large scale, but never have had an outdoor layout before now. Yep, a ring of track around the Christmas tree and later even a ring of bare track around the swimming pool. Now I have just started a real layout (350’ mainline) with floating track on a cement roadbed, with the wiring in buried conduit. I’m not handy or talented in this stuff, just enjoy piddling with it. Far from a purist, I have a pup from every villiage as far as roling stock goes. About 250 various train cars and 28 engines. Going to get serious one of these days and get out the paint gun. When I get further along, this will be the Rio Rico Rail Road (RRRR) named for where I now live in S. AZ.

Would post photos if I knew how. I’m not even sure this will post!

Sorry about any spelling errors, never could spell.

Norm

Welcome Norman. You’re in good company with all the other old farts around here  .
Under the posting window you will see a blue link to “My Files”. There you can upload your pics and then post them here after they are uploaded. Be sure to resize your pics to 640 or 800 pixels wide before uploading them.

Norm, welcome. However, your recent activities appear to put your sanity in doubt… whether this was inherited, is of course unclear, but in the worst case, you may simply be (feel) much younger now;-))) Best, Zubi

Hi Norm,
Also suggest you rename jpegs before uploading and keep it simple. No spaces in the file name.
Some stable you have there.
Ralph

Howdy, and welcome aboard!

Salutations and welcome to the madhouse, Norm. One piece of advice, don’t drink anything Fr Fred offers you, it isn’t really water!

Thank you for the welcome. I think I may have this working. Here is a photo of the start of my project. Very simple concept, with 2 sections seperated by a “train shed” between. Will have an “old west” theme on one side and modern European with pantograph on the other. The plan is for this to be more about toy trains for the grand kids and great grand kids, and less about the fine details.

Man I miss my F-250 (1978) . Looks like you’re in Arizona. Welcome to the insanity!!! You have the right Idea! Just have fun. Sean

Speak for yourself Brian LOL  Not all of us are old farts. Norm welcome, you picked a great site with great people. You will learn a lot hear. Great start on your layout. Cant wait to see more pictures

Welcome indeeb, Norman. As for the name of the railroad, Rolling RR’s sounds good to me… I greatly admire simplicity in all areas, and the appearance of your track in two straight lines has much to commend it - also saves on having to buy an expensive rail-bender, too.

Regardless what that young snipper-whapper Shawn notes, many of us here ARE old fartz, and proud to have gotten this far without getting killed one way or another. Speaking as somebody who was a professional target for almost 34 years, I’m one of the lucky ones who got to live long enuff to be an old fart. Like you, I haven’t yet made my mind up zackly what it is i want in the way of trains. Darn it, there are just so many of 'em out there, eh?

My excuse for having some of each [cackle]…

Best wishes from East Anglia

LOL but its hobbies like this that keep us all young.

Hi Norm.

I got a '79 super-cab F 350 sitting in my barn with 34,000 miles on it.
Can’t afford to drive it with the 460 getting about 6 MPG.

Oh, nice layout getting underway there, too!

Hobbies are supposed to be fun, and it looks like you found a way to enjoy it.

As for dealing with critics – just offer to SELL them whatever they’re nit picking on, at 3 times the going rate, and they tend to leave you alone.

Norman,
I must say I loved your introduction…
We have multiple Dave’s…Brian’s…Shawn,Sean’s …but how many Normans? Note to self… check members list for Normans!
