Large Scale Central

Fan house

Every mine needs fresh air. The fan house for the Majestic Colliery will be loosely based on the ‘new’ fan house at the Dorrance Colliery in Wikes-Barre.

(the one on the left)

Bob’s got a new toy (Sintra) and he’s learning how to use it.
All kidding aside
Nice start bob, What is the brick section from?

Thats some walls from the Piko brewery kit. The kit itself is pretty small for 1:20, but the various bits are usuable for other buildings.

Huummm…wonder if a Geep 9 fan will work for that application?

Railroad Model Craftsman magazine has in recent months had a couple articles about modeling these things.
In HO, but, hey, modeling is modeling.

Hey Bob,
That is a cool prototype, never saw one like that before.
I did a couple of mine ventilation jobs over the years but never anything like that.
Just based on the photos I would guess that thier intent was to move a large volumn of air
at very low velocity. I wonder how the pressure relief was handled?
Nice project.
Rick

The fan complex there had three fans, including one that was in use from 1883 until the mines in the area closed after the Knox mine disaster. The fans are huge (called Guibal fans), and driven by a steam engine. The brick fan house (Hillman fan house) had a double-entry fan, where it drew air in from both sides and pushed it out the top. The “new” fan house with the steel fan box was a single entrance fan. More information than you can want, including drawings, site plan, and lots of information on the HABS/HAER site:

and some photos in this gallery, about half way down.

I’m a fan, but I think the housing is too small for me…

Cool. How will it be powered?

I really have to stop looking at details. Projects tend get away from me. Here’s a layout of the whole fan complex. Sorry for the size, but any smaller and you can’t see the size of the various buildings. Its only 145 feet from side to side, which makes it about 85" in 1:20. Which is more than twice the length of the freight transfer. Someone talk me out of making all the buildings, please?

OK, I came to my senses, at least for now. Here’s the progress so far today. Have the airway leading to the mine vent shaft blocked out, and started on the tee and angle on the fan housing.

Looks great BOb but I think you need to do all of it. You have a lot of room in that yard to fill.

Bob it’s looking good. And sorry but I’m with Geoff on this one for at least two of the fans and housings. And I do believe that working fans with both a steam vent/smoke stack and inherent sounds of the operating fans will add to your personal enjoyment.

A couple more

coming along nicely, Bob…

I don’t think he’s looking for work; having too much fun in the workshop  Looks great Bob.

But on the 2nd pic page one the "JOB'S CLASSIFIED" is under the work bench? Huuumm...must be saving it to paint on! I like the plans/drawings....as someone once told me "The Devil is in the details" wonder who that could have been? Lookin' good :)

And forever deprive the universe of a fascinating forum thread? Hell no :D I want to be able to go to sleep with a clear conscience.
