Large Scale Central

Fall

I managed to get some running in this past Sunday. Weather was perfect low 60’s and no wind. Been a warm nov so far. I ran the Big John and Thomas for a little bit. Then my son wanted the Big John to pull the thomas coaches.

Nice…

I’d bet HLW would sell a few more of those Big Johns if folks knew they could look that good (versus the garish paint from the factory)…Nice shots Shawn!

Shawn, nice pictures & layout…

Nice pics Shawn. Where are the Thomas shots :frowning:

Good looking run.

I’m with Dave. You got a Thomas picture? I may soon be buying one for the club layout. A visitor to the club layout on Sunday asked if I had one.

Sorry Holleywood and Doug. No shots of Thomas. My little one wouldnt let me stop Thomas for shots. My camera does not do well with taking shots of the trains in motion.

The Pacolet Valley Railroad rolled out their new combine today.

No. 1332 out of the Backshop. This was a Christmas Annie I got from Cale. I changed the number and the cab. It’s still missing a few parts I may have lost

Still have to “decorate” the American. There’s a nice shot of some pretty spiffy USMRR Americans on Shorpy.

I love the 4-4-0 of 1850 to 1870 era. Maybe someday when there is a confluence of money, health, and time … We ran at Mike’s Monday evening from about 4 to 7:30. These are of his train. Only took pics of my own after dark, is pretty much stripes of light on black. Summer weather here made maintenance difficult, but oh well, there is still a railroad out there. Weather Monday night was perfect fall - just shy of 50F, no clouds, half moon.

Mike got two short video clips of my PRR 4-6-0 and caboose all lit up. Short train; 3 Bachmann reefers are the sum total of freight cars I have. http://www.youtube.com/user/Firemanmike500#p/a/u/1/HjeRPkXKLkc Turning out of cut into tunnel, http://www.youtube.com/user/Firemanmike500#p/a/u/0/Mfiba52Aaag

Forrest,
Judging by the grades on your friend Mike’s pike, I don’t think you want to pull more than 3 reefers with your 10 wheeler.
Nice job lighting up your train.
Ralph

Mike was quite pleasantly surprised that after a summer of little running and minor maintenance due to weather and the way life goes, only 3 spots need tweaking to get 4-6-0 to track reliably.
And one of those spots was tunnel, where he has eternal conflict with gopher, mole, or something.

Thanks: I was going to settle on 5 freight cars w/4whl caboose; 4 passenger cars; 4 freight w/Combine; as "standard consists".

Mike has track power with some kind of wireless handheld controller. Don’t know if it features some kind of power compensation for grades: they don’t seem to have observable effect on 4-6-0 speed with these loads.

Translation, wouldn’t having too much of a load be slowing it down on grade?

But then --> there’s that gear durability issue.
And it probably depends on invisible torques on gear.

Forrest,
If three worked fine, try one more with a caboose. If that works OK, add the fifth.
The grade looks pretty steep in the photo. But pictures can be deceiving.
Mike has plenty of power with his ABA diesels.

As of right now, when running my own freight cars, it isn't an issue, 3 freight cars are all I have! :D More will require making from scratch, no more $80 cars for the foreseeable future.

The Pacolet Valley Railroad ran many trains today. Early morning freights ran the Sunny View ROW.

Passenger service to Sunny View ran most of the day.

After turning on the Wye, the Blue Ridge Flyer rolls out of Sunny View.

A video short. Ralph http://vimeo.com/17066700

Good to see your trains out and about Ralph. Looks like the weather was in your favor.

In Blue Ridge Flyer 2, them boys are driving like they have somewhere they want to be

I'd say that was probably dinner time ;) Ralph
