Fall Fun!

After clearing the line from all those leaves that are now falling I was able to get some running in.

Also forcast are now calling for the first accumulating snows this thursday night into friday. The guys had to test the plow out and make sure they were not going to have any clearance issues.

Looking good Shawn. Last we saw that plow it was getting overgrown. I got out earlier also and did the leaf clearing thing. Walked the line for any obstructions and pulled the “Fall Special” out onto the main line. Passengers were boarded and off we went for a day of ease.

Arriving back at Maple Leaf. My brother also stopped in today to enjoy the day.

Cool!
Good shots guys…yes I see Shawn is gettin’ the plow ready and Dave it’s great to see some shots of the RR!

So I got 154 documentation shots of Oct 12th from the “sign guy” as Jon labeled it. The shots are incredible IMO and helped me realize what details I need to add and the difference a camera in someone’s hand just observing my layout and not working it makes. These are a few of Scott’s shots that I liked and still analyzing 151-left! Thanks Scott…aka “sign guy”

I especially like this one as it gives you a documented depth of the garden fence built on 8’ intervals with 6-4x posts in place. The deck truss is 13.5’ long and approx 16’ to Lemoyne tower.

I like this shot, David. A view I’ve not seen before. David M. Very nice consist. Where’s that Circus Train? Ralph

Hmmmm. Can’t get Shawn’s photo the usual way. Don’t know why it didn’t show up. Try it another way. Ralph

Ralph, It’s still getting headend power.Since I buy mostly used or older equipment I try to shop everything before runninng. Also working on outside storage to help cut the trips for getting out something to run.It will be out next spring. That pass consist still has 2 locos and 2 cars to get finished.

By the way I didn’t have any appreciable slowing on the grade with this consist, but I still need to check the grade.

Dave, Those are nice shots and I know from watching Scott at work there are more coming, but the camera he had might have helped with the view. I like the depth on the first one seems his eye is on the center of his subject where mine always goes to the front.

What great shots on page 5. Shawn and Dave, you have made great progress. Snow and leaves are part of “the scenery provided”, and should be enjoyed. I think you guys are progressing well in the hobby and I think the hobby is progressing well by your examples. Thanks for sharing.

Didn’t realize David M was a FF?

Nice shots!

I have a 4x12 train barn nearly finished that will be used for most of my rolling stock and engines. I too am tired of carrying stuff to the layout and the workshop was too far away to run track. I had to take a break from the trains to get some other fall projects done but that interruption won’t last long!

Ralph, You have seen that section of the layout before ,like I said it’s nice having someone just browse the layout with a “very nice” camera and knowing how to use it that makes the difference IMO and as Dave M. already stated > I have some favorite spots that I frequent but going through Scott’s shots I realized there are more if I would look at the RR as a whole.

I like this one as it sorta shows the whole town and there is another train on the viaduct behind the Amtrak as you can see the platform of a 55’ tank car above the last Amfleet car. Below is some more of Scott’s eye/documentation.

It is starting to get a bit colorful around here.
My Maple tree has dumped a ton of leaves on the RR.
I’ll have to do some major cleaning before running today.

We are now past peak ( even had our first accumlating snow last week) and dealing with all the leaves falling. I cant keep my RR cleared for more then an hour. Have to wait until the bulk of the leaves are down before i start the clean-up and running. Just using this time to get my steam Donkey done, log cabin and sawmill

Great pictures Ken.

My only question is. Do you have a train painted to match?
I wish we had good fall color.
Thanks

We’re getting lots of bright yellow trees around here. Very pretty.

Since next Sunday is Nov 1, the Botanic had the season closing and Halloween bash this weekend. Ok, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to me either.

Friday night was WET. Larry Tennyson brought his Ghost train, and, surprise, Navin from Aristo-Craft.

Saturday was cool, but a beautiful fall day and the garden was packed all day. It’s traditional on closing weekend to put as many cars as will fit on track 8 without the engine hitting the caboose at the crossing. I put my Mallet down there with 27 cars. Later, it mysteriously stopped. All looked to be on track, so I tried going. Grr–grr–grr… “that’s very odd.” I got a couple diesels to pull this train while I investigated, and when I picked up my Mallet, all 4 front right drivers FELL OFF THE engine! “Maybe I should check these more often.” It took about an hour to put these right.

Later, I had it so the engine missed the caboose by less than 2 inches by adding a 20ft gondola.

A coupler came apart and the engine came around and smashed into the caboose. The impact busted the 20footer so it wasn’t that close any more.

Sunday was again a beautiful day, but the gremlins had gotten loose. I had my mallet in its traditional Sunday Afternoon location, when Larry came to set up his ghost train. He was fetching the cars and lining them up by the fence while I was watching the kids. The mob wasn’t being bad, but was getting closer than Larry was comfortable. Oops, got to go fix the UP. Oops. Got to go fix the UP. Ooops, the UP again? CRASH! My mallet fell off the track onto the gravel. Ow. Larry wanted the track fixed before he put his Mallet on. Dave shimmed it up where it had gotten a bit sloped.

Once we got the ghost train happily running, I was walking along, wondering if I should set mine on the #4 track. Crunch, Bash, Crash. Oh! The F units on #4 are plowing the cars off the track! A coupler had broken, naturally, the one behind the engines. While I was fixing that, the Super Chief stopped. A coupler on #4 had broken.

“Why isn’t Thomas running?” Hmm. I don’t know. I don’t find any reason for Thomas not to be going. Now he’s running.

I put my Mallet on #4, where it ran without incident till closing time.

The garden was completely packed with guests all afternoon and it was a beautiful fall day.

Photos? Did I mention the gremlins were loose?
