Nice!
Dave,
You were a big help with that one pic you sent me. Gave me a better idea of the main structure of this locomotive.
Note the grate change on last 2 shots
Thanks
Looks great! I want to make a GP40FH-2, since they’re so wacky looking.
Bob McCown said:Bob, I have no clue as to what the hell I'm building prototypically!! just love the look, a vision of my youth, going off the cuff with picture's, using material's on hand , a wing and a prayer!

Wish me luck!
Since you seem to have great skills in the building of a locomotive. Why not research the thing properly, and follow the prototype.
There are lots of plans available through the “Klambake” library, and through any number of model railroad sites on Google.
You might take a look at what the rebuilds of the Via Rail F40 fleet look like…their new paint scheme sure looks like it will be a classic.
You say you don’t know what that hatch was for…the information is out there…just do the research.
You seem to be off to a good start on a fine model…the extra effort will be worth your while, and you will find great satisfaction in getting right…good luck…Keep up the good work.
Bob;
Wacky looking yes…but take a look at the Via Rail rebuilds…ya gotta love 'em…
They are adding a gen set to the rear for seperate HE power… Some think it is ugly, but with their new paint scheme; I’m thinking they will look great…
The whole fleet is being rebuilt in Montreal…there are about a half dozen completed, so far. The first one (6400) didn’t get the gen set, so is roaming the Eastern lines as a “One Off”. It will get the gen set later, I’m told.
There are a few ex GO Transit units on lease to Via for a while. They are basicly F40’s, but of a later class. They are at this time, handling the Northern Quebec route, although, I hear they did operate on the Halifax-Montreal trains.
BTW…anyone interested in travelling on Via Rail…look for great savings, of up to 75%…watch their web page…or Google Via Rail Canada…

What hatch?
The Vent, or whatever you said you didn’t know what it was…
Hey David; she’s looking good and definitely has that milk carton on wheels look of the real ones.
Don’t sweat the details Dave. Already you have this 16" gauge modeler beat hands down…

Now he’s going to want one for his new shed
Jon,
You know better than to show me stuff like that!
Dave,
Why not just make an F40 shed! So when it happens and mother is pissed I can refer her to this thread stating that you “GOADED ME” into it!
As for the build I got the center two grates covering the “thing-a-miggy” and a few other things done. However I hated the angles on the rear end and made a bad decision to cut it and hate the results. So being pissed off I cut the back half off and gonna start over.
ON a better note I located photos I took from the hospital parking garage roof about 9 1/2 yrs ago while my wife was in labor and have some nice clear roof shots of #287. The garage is so conviently located next to the CVRR viaduct which Amtrak uses to turn it’s loco’s around. The doctor said it was gonna be several hours sooo?
Rebuilt the back end today and much happier with the results. Also finished up the front two grates covering “whatever the hell it is” and the center two that “thing a miggy” uses. The rear grates covering the “hind quarter electrodes” are different in design and need some thought put into them on how to proceed. So I moved onto the opposite side of the loco and sketched out my lines. Quick photo dump as pictures are better than words.

Another photo dump…and for Fred’s sake I’m working on the “Radiators” along with other things. Wish I was set up to make molds.

Looks good so far. What will you be using for the drive system? Later RJD
