ER&I box/tool car

The boss came around the ER&L shops and told the crew to get off their butts and build a box/tool car. And don’t order anything new for it!. Build it out of junk laying around. “But boss, this is a lumber/mining RR. At least cut us some new beams. We will use plywood for the walls. And there is a set of used trucks out there in the field somewhere.”

Framework.

“Token” under carriage hardware.

Now if the boss can keep the crew busy, I’ll update as they build it.

John are those a commercial queens post or something your fabricating?

Devon, Those are Ozark Minies.

Nice start!

The boss checks on the progress.

“Well, we got one wall just about done. But yer so cheap we can’t find much in the way of door hardware in the junk.”

Boss says, “Use whatever, you can’t see both sides at the same time!”

Nice work so far. Once I started building cars with wood I have a very hard time going to plastic cars. Wood looks so much better.

Shawn, and wood smells so much better going through the table saw.

The problem with wood cars is I can’t leave them outside in the freight yard like I do with my plastic rolling stock.(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-frown.gif)

Why not, if you use redwood, it will turn a nice grey patina.

Mock of car to see if the five main parts line up–which is a miracle in itself! Now on to the roof which has to be removable since this will be a battery car.

Looks great so far!

I need some clamps like those!

Lowes sells’em.

Oh, in case your wundrin what scale this is: 1:20.3 Standard gauge.

Oh, I cant leave them wooden boxcars outside?

That’s why I built a train barn so everything can be put away. We may not get much rain but the sun here on the desert does a good job cooking my town and our desert wind can do a good job of derailing trains sometimes.

Oh yes, my trains “live” inside. We just play in the back yard.

David,

I really like that old box car. Sway back and everything.

John said: “Tool” then later he said “Junk” !

I actually laughed when I read this Ray. I would have bet big dollars you would have a selection of these clamps to choose from. The Irwin quik grips are the bomb. And they make them from very small to quite large. I have them in three sizes and love them. The very smallest ones are very handy

John, I am interested in everything F. So do you have F standard gauge track laid (yes rooster we know, I sad laid, (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif))? and if so what are you doing for wheel sets not to mention chassis?
