Large Scale Central

ER&I box/tool car

Two or three years ago, I was corresponding with a company back East about “F” scale SG trucks for a diorama I was building. (I built a 40’ SG box car to interchange with a 30’ NG boxcar, both 1:20.3. After several emails and answers back, all I got was the usual “soon”.

I gave up.

My SG cars run on NG trucks for now. (Which was prototypical for some NG RRs.)

SG 40’ 1:20.3 boxcar

The inebriated shop guys cobbled up a brake assembly. No climbing to the top of this car.

Great looking car John, nice work.

We get a lot of ‘western’ movies on tv in the afternoon over here. It has been too wet and windy for train running of late. So many of these films have a loco and cars featured in them - usually the old D&RGW or RGS stock. If I can watch trains in the back yard then tv is a good substitute,

Ready for the other hardware. Roof is removable.

Nice!

That’s a good looking piece of rolling stock, John. Can’t wait to see the finishing details.

How is the roof held in place? Friction, or something else?

I glued some guides inside and then made wider roof trusses that slip down beside them. However, if I lift it by the roof, it will come off. I have to be careful. I guess you could call it friction.

Nice work as always! My favorite is still the pickle car though.

This thing?

Hardware added to make it look functional.

Checking it out coupled to the 1:20.3 center cab. Looks in proportion.

Yep that’s the one!

Very nice so far, What are you using as eyes for the cut lever? I’ve tried a couple of different things. Still need to add one to the rear of my Porter.

Jon,

Little brass cotter pins. Drill hole, dip in glue and push in. You can fancy it up by using a #1 0r *0 washer to act as a flange if you want to. Then you have a lifting eye.

Thanks John. I’ve been using some small eyes that I found in Michael’s installed the same way. They work, but look a little light to me…

The undersized look at might just be an illusion caused by the over-sized cut bar. I’d like to use lighter rod but I want to use it and not worry about bending it.

Painted and roof “tar” applied. The tar is flat black un-thinned enamel applied just like real roof tar- with a brush and “mopped” on.

That is a good looking boxcar. I like the outside bracing and the details bring it all together.

The pickle car is pretty cool too.

Looking very good!

Ready for service.
