I lied!!!

Pisses me off but outta my control!

Believe me, our club’s display (which is on the ground, not modular) was mostly completed by the time the Fairgrounds employee informed us that the show was a no-go. It seriously sucks… but it’s probably a good call in the end.

I guarantee that there are many more cases out there than are actually known right now.

The tests take time to get results, and the virus is extremely contagious, more so than cold or flu. It lasts in the air for 3 hours after an infected person breathes and for several days on hard surfaces.

The most concerning thing about the virus is that it is very good at sticking to human skin. The virus can stick to people that aren’t even sick with it, leading many people to be “carriers” and causing community spread.

Joe,

I honestly don’t give a rattsass about the virus and would rather attend the ECLSTS 2020…but because of such I need to rearrange my plans as I have other duties I must attend too because of the confusion.

An update on the show.

We spent the day today getting the NHGRS layout up and running. At 4:30 we had the layout ready for operations

At 5pm the governor announced that all events of greater then 250 persons would be cancelled effective immediately

The show staff has asked if they limit the attendees in the dealer hall to 250 could they open. They will get a response in the morning.

No matter the outcome this will be a large loss to many of our dealers and my heart goes out to them.

Stan

Without timed entrances and exits, you’ll just move the crowd outdoors. It’s sad it’s so close to the day. No real prep time for the Pandemic.

That really sucks, but it is the right thing to do if you study any of the experiences of countries that have contained it Vs. countries that have allowed exponential spread. I’m hopeful that things will be returning to normal before Ken’s open house in April. Right now, get ready for mass closures. Non essential business might be forced to close. This will be tough on EVERYONE.

I’ll be at the diner in the AM Cliff and anyone else. At the least you can start the day on a full stomach(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

I will see you there then, Dave. Rain or shine, virus or no virus.

Update as of 10:59 pm on Thursday, March 12th:

The vendors and layouts are all set up. Everyone’s hard work is really appreciated and we are still waiting on a call from the fairgrounds with permission to continue the show at a capacity below 250. Once we have an answer, we will post here and on Facebook to let everyone know. Thank you everyone for your patience and cooperation.

That is from the ECLSTS website. The show draws more than 250 people. I don’t see how they can limit it without turning folks away, or herding them out of the show.

I had a bad feeling when I started the drive out here, but I didn’t know why…

This was on the SEPGRS facebook page.

The Maryland State Fairgrounds official website has the 2020 ECLSTS Show as being cancelled as well as other events the same day. However I keep getting told that it will go on. Not sure what is happening I can only go by what I see on websites.

THE SHOW IS OFFICIALLY CANCELLED.

(According to the show’s facebook page)

Doors are open for buyers, no admission fee. Officially closed otherwise.

They were starting to break down about 11 when I left. But, me, Cliff, Dave Maynard, and Dave Marconi all had fun…(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

(and I did buy a shirt)

Here’s a bit more of a report.

Thanks to Hollywood’s suggestion, he, Dave Maynard, Ken Brunt, and myself (behind the camera) had a great breakfast at the Nautilus diner near the fairgrounds. Here we are, just showing up – proof that LSC held its end up at the show! (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Just before this, Dan from Star explained what I posted on prior: that the show was officially closed, but they were letting folks in at no charge to walk the halls and buy stuff. No MD officials there, all was relaxed. And the great news (as I understand it – and I’m not an official source) is that since MD closed the show, MD will refund the facility rental.

The center hall was very full of vendors, and a few vendors had to be placed in the other (vast) layout hall. Here’s two stitched-together shots of the vendor hall.

And a pan of the layout hall. Keep in mind that this hall is a lot larger than York’s, so the layouts didn’t fill it. Room for growth!

Aikenback Live Steamers had a full team there, and all the layouts were running.

For next year, there is no natural alcove-ish place, except to either side of the concession stand in the rear of the center vendor hall. I neglected to get shots of this, so this is only an indication of where.

However, there’s a nifty little shed, right outside the main door, that I might inquire into… (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

I heard from a couple of vendors that things were packing up around noon. And at 11:30, the layout packup was well underway.

I’m glad that quite a few folks showed up and bought stuff. There were some great deals, and not so great deals, the usual mix. I bought some stuff for myself and Jerry B.; and there was a steady trickle of purchases walking out the door – that is, between the hours of 9 and 11:30, when I bailed.

The negatives go without saying, such as the downturn in the hobby in general, key vendors no longer participating, challenges with a new venue (no small thing), loss of traditional alcove & D&B space, and now this shut-down that no one saw coming. Also MD saying the show was cancelled at the last minute, which surely turned many away. Not to mention all the costs that vendors & clubs spent in time and travel, and their disappointing outcomes from all that effort.

But some positives need pointing up. The doors were opened to the public, and against all the information to the contrary, the public did show up and did buy. MD will refund the rent fees. Star did a fantastic job handling this change in venue, and helping vendors and clubs make the switch, and to show up in force. All the pieces were in place for a great show, and that’s saying a lot.

Going forward, now that the venue change is over, and assuming virus threats aren’t a factor again, I think there’s a lot of hope for the show, and for our presence there. We in LSC have options in setting up our own alcove (e.g., a couple of canopy tents in the layout hall). We can also pick our own hotel (from the many available), which best serves the purposes of the Drag & Brag and our membership in general.

Tonight, the Drag & Brag will happen somehow. I know of three others who’ll be there (at the Embassy Suites bar-restaurant), and that’s fine. Per Ric’s advice, we will be winging it. If more show up, that’s all the better! (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Maybe you should have bought them all and kept them for a few years to sell at 3 times the price (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)

Well, that was the shortest show I’ve ever attended. Literally 3 hours long. Somehow, I still ended up buying something…

Don’t laugh, Jon, cause that woulda worked. They don’t have the date of the show on them like the others did.

So if the shirts don’t have dates, they can reuse them for next year!

Would someone please post a picture of the shirt?

The official Drag & Brag Report

By default, the D&B was held at the Embassy Suites bar-restaurant. If you were paying attention to my prior posts, the ES atrium is under reconstruction, so we held the grand event here.

I was gratefully surprised that many people attended. Not the usual LSC crowd, but kindred spirits who’ve attended the D&B in the past, and still did this time.

[this line edited after i remembered other things] Be that as it may, several objects of Drag were offered. Jason Gallaway brought one of his ingot flats, of which he had quite a string running on the Big Green layout, and which have real aluminum ingots he cast himself. Another gentleman (didn’t catch his name) brought a group of (propane?) tanks he had 3d printed.

I rang a glass, and did a brief presentation on the Southwick Turbine Windmill. After that, good ol’ Ray, from Toronto, gave a wonderful talk on his locomotive and the intricacies of its operation in its mill in Canada.

Much eating occurred, from the free Hors d’oeuvre to the big ticket menu items. It was nice to eat what we wanted and when.

Much conversation took place, some of it railroad related, some not, but all good…

We were well served, by a wonderful lady named LaChelle. Fred, this is your new Donna.

Wish y’all had been there,

oops

Post deleted, due to it seeming too whiney in retrospect.

PS: The hotel did a midnight fire drill last night, which was annoying. But no huge deal; and they gotta do what they gotta do.

….Great to see you all had a good time, in the spirit of “Drag & Brags” of the past.

I’d like to be introduced to “Ray” from Toronto, if someone could send me a way of communicating with him…PLEASE.

I’m sure I know the person on the left in the second picture…refresh my memory, with his name…please.

Thank you Cliffy, for your pictures and report.

Not as fancy as some of previous shirts, but it’ll do.

And I had this returned to me for safe keeping.
