EBT water crane

At this year’s TrainOps, @RGSNH was kind enough to present me with one of his kits for an EBT style water crane. Since I just uncovered my workbench again, I decided to start assembling it.

The kit consists of 5 resin printed parts, some laser cut wood, some brass tube, and a handful of other bits and bobs.

It also comes with some instructions with drawings.

First step was to remove the supports from the 3d printed parts. Took about ten careful minutes with the flush cutters. Next I’ll file and sand the 3d parts and start assembling the base.

I absolutely love this model. Al did an amazing job, it looks great and works just as well. Im glad you got one, Bob.

It was a lot of fun doing the field research and measurements for this model. Al gave me one too. I’ll be following your build for any advice. The first thing I learned is that I will need a pair of flush cutters!

About ten minutes with a small file, some 450 grit sandpaper, and a sanding pad, cleaned up the 3d printed parts nicely. Only thing I needed to be a bit aggressive with was the fit between the brass tube and the top.

First step is to assemble the base. The kit comes with a short bit of brass tube to align the base pieces, and I used the base casting to make sure the 4 holes also aligned. Clamped everything together with a machinist square to keep things from warping.

Once this is dry Ill attach the sides of the base.

Base all glued up. My magnetic build plate came in handy.

Just need to sand it some, distress the wood, and figure out what color stain to use.

Drilled out all the holes in preparation for assembly. My set of tiny bits came in handy. Started cutting and bending the .040 wire as well.

Next up is priming and painting the printed parts, and blackening the brass wire.

Bob,

I’m sure you’ll include this in your next step, buthow do you choose to blacken brass? I havejust started a project where I may need to do so.

Somewhere in my stuff I have Blacken-It, but danged if I can find it. May need to buy some…

I’ve had decent luck with Jax for brass. They have other products for other metals.

It blows me away that you actually kept the instructions!

Only got it a few weeks ago. Not enough time to misplace them.
