Large Scale Central

EBT Robertsdale Layout Build Log

Looking real good!

Nice progress, Randy…

Trains running yet??? (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Thanks all!

Ken, If I cut stuff as needed I think this might take forever! Hey, Different strokes… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Andy, does a truck though a switch count? (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-embarassed.gif)

David, Thanks so much for having me over. Don’t worry, I wouldn’t sacrifice quality for speed. But you better believe I’m always thinking of ways to be more efficient.

Dave not only had me over but put some new traction tires on my new LGB Mogul I got from Mike Toney. It ran great for more than an hour after that. It was a real nice afternoon.

When I wasn’t lounging and watching trains, I was busy on my own pike. I laid out some points with long 3/8 bolts I had. (painted them red) Then I put one every 4 feet on the main and used my level to set the grade at 3/4% . I had to dig just a titch but there are places for that to fill. You can see where I laid in some of the sod I cut out to fill the low spot in the lower left. I also mowed the grass on the shortest setting where the tracks will be.

1 establish level

Out at the end where the trestle will be I put in a mini wall and cut in to the hill bit on the other side. The trestle will go around that cherry tree.

2 mini wall

I also was able to get all the switch blanks painted as well as enough rail for 5 switches. I got the stock rail completely spiked down on the next switch and have the rail on one side of the frog done too. They should go at a good pace. Starting to feel a bit real now.

You cant tell from the picture, but Randy’s Mogul is pulling my EBT cars. Since that is his interest, I figured I should run those cars for him.

So Randy, when you ask me to come over to your place, I had better be dressed to work, huh? (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Yeah Dave, I think I’ll be lucky to get all the track down by the beginning of fall, so until then it’s suspenders and hard hats. I did very much appreciate the EBT string you had out. I was proud to pull it with the new loco.

Almost got the second switch finished tonight. I can tell it going to be better than the last already. I’ve decided against the Spiker since it seems to deform the rail foot when you hit it hard enough to get the spike in. With that in mind, I did order a pair of spiking pliers from Micro Mark today. I’ve already got a callus starting in the middle of my palm. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

Wait…your hangin with Maynard???

Rooster, well, um, he was over here once. So I wouldn’t say “hanging”. Don’t worry, he will get wise and find better friends. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Besides Rooster, he got 30 cents worth of traction tyres on his locomotive for free by coming over here. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Heh, that’s what I was worrying you would do. Yeah it’s true Roster, David and I are buds. Be afraid.

Well, a fallen tree had the power out when I got home so I did the only logical thing I could think of, Dig. Ive got it all mostly level. (well 1/2 to 3/4 percent grade) Maybe a bit more tweaking and run a string line to double check to morrow, then I can start building the 360 degree trestle. I have several 8 and 10 foot pieces of dimensional lumber jammed in my Honda Civic awaiting their fate with the saw blade tomorrow. In the picture you can still see the scar from the old dog-bone in the grass. The near loop is very visible on the right of the new grade, and the far barely on the left just before the end of the rock wall.

Nice Randy

So, when can I bring over a train to run? (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Tell the truth Maynard…your eyein’ up the slide !

Randy put the slide in the garage please

Rooster, you are no fun. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-frown.gif)

Us kids have to play.

Nice start Randy. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Waiting expectantly for more…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Why does Rooster get on me for leaving my toys out. Randy left his slide and house out. Nice slide Randy.

Your progress is looking good. I like the terrain you have to work with. I could have lots of fun with that (shut up Rooster)

Shawn, Rooster is just jealous that folks have the toys he wanted to have when he was little.

Oh yes, that terrain just begs for a mountain railroad.

David?? Not just when Rooster was little… He’s still asking me for a slide… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Looking good, certainly a terrain challenge, but if the big guys could do it - so can you.

The only advice I can offer on digging relates to when Deep Cut on my RR was first excavated, and then later when it was partially buried in a tunnel. Be sure to dig on the warmest days with the highest humidity. Drink lots of water and the sweat that pours off of you will keep the ground moist making for easier digging. Oh, and that 3" rock in the middle of the ROW that’s just a half inch too high - it will tun out to be the top of a 100 pound boulder! Better to chip away at it then trying to excavate.

Progress looks great - Thanks for sharing.
