EBT Boxcar build thread

In light of several things (one being I need more boxcars on my layout) I’m going to re-do the EBT boxcar build article, and echo it here. So those of you that need pictures, etc, stay tuned.

Are they done yet?

Staying tuned.
(Actually just plathering posts so I can break 3000.)

LOL!! For post 3k...Hi John how are you??

A little late replying, but except for old creaking bones, I’m OK.

Cool. I need inspiration to get back going on my steel box car project. I saw some Plastruct “Z” braces at Caboose the other day when I was picking up another steel hopper (birthday present from the in-laws), and they’ll do nicely.

Later,

K

So far I have up to page 4 re-photographed. Instructions haven’t changed, guess I didn’t mess those up!

So when do we get started? I have the wood ready to cut, the glue mixed, and the shop cleaned up.

Wood? There sure isn’t much wood on this one.

I guess this means I may have to make some more…

Sure wish I could get some nice EBT trucks for under $80. :o

There’s 4 pieces of wood, I think. The peak bits, and the placard board on the ends.

and roof walks…

Ah, right…

Could the acrylic body be built from wood so Chuck and I can can build too?

I would think so.

Yes, no reason, but I’d be a bit worried about the grain of the wood coming through. One of the nice things about doing the acrylic is that it makes it very easy to glue on the side bracing; you just put a small bit of the glue and it seeps into any crack. You could probably use styrene sheets for the sides instead of acrylic.

Good point Bruce, hadn’t thought about that.
And probably easier to glue the Plastruct shapes to the acrylic than to wood.

Yes, but don’t let THAT discourage you! You might consider making it a wood boxcar with outside framing…

I can build either way as I have lots of wood and 2 sheets (4’x 8’) of .080 styene, but I was hoping these were going to be the boxcars with the steel castings on the ends and wood sides. I have 4 sets of castings I want to use.

Yep…seeing how I have an endless supply of wood and no acrylic. (And I would use maple because it is hard and very little grain).

But only a single set of SI decals...............................
