Yeh, I know I have been hiding under a rock for a few months so…
I haven’t looked on E-bay for a couple of months. Went to my favorite bookseller and seen he had “Mexican Narrow Gauge” for a “buy it now”.
Fairly reasonable, I thought. I have bought numerous books from this guy over the years.
I buy it, and Lo and Behold, he’s not allowed by E-bay to accept money orders or cashiers checks!
An e-mail or two back and forth…Unless I want to set up a pay-pal account, I’m screwed.
He doesn’t like paypal either, but has no choice.
And he can’t even sell me the book on the side, without penalties. Why not? How the hell would E-bay know?
(*&^%#%^ing E-bay.
Now I guess I finally have to set up a Pay-pal account.
Sigh…
John,
in Australia, as from May 19th, this year, a seller must offer PayPal as an acceptable method of payment. This, at present does not prohibit other payment methods. However, very soon, PayPal will be the only acceptable method of payment. All this is line with PayPal offering a security for the buyer so that they may shop in the comfort that all is well in the world. However, this does not stop the buyer cancelling the PayPal payment after receiving the goods. PayPal is wonderful for a buyer and fraught with dangers for a seller, particularly in those countries that accept credit cards as a PayPal payment method.
from EBay instructions today …
If buyers choose to pay with a method other than PayPal, they confirm the final costs and then receive the payment instructions that you specified when you listed the item.
and today when I made a money order payment …
As of October 20, 2008, eBay prohibits sellers from soliciting payments by check or money order by mail. In the unlikely event that you cannot access your PayPal account due to technical difficulties, payments should be payable to xxxxxxxxxxxx . For your information only, our mailing address is:
xxxxxx
xxx
xxxxx
as always , your mileage may vary …
John Bouck said:I don't know what the problem would be with that. With PayPal the buyer is protected, the payment is fast it is secure, the record of payment is there--and it's fast and painless. I've used a PayPal account for years without ever having an issue with the system.

As a seller I don’t like being forced to use a payment method that allows eBay to collect more fees. As a buyer I always use it. Never a problem. I don’t leave money in my PayPall account though.
I agree Ron. I’ve been using paypal for some years without a problem both as a buyer and a seller. With their atm card I can use the buyers payment to ship the Item on the same day. I think it is great. Alot of other people I deal with on line now accept paypal which means I am not transmitting my credit card number. All good. So John quit complaining and just do it. LOL
No.
If it’s mandated, I’m out.
If evil-bay is behind it, I’m worried.
What I dont like is the notion that for Paypal to work it requires some sort of credit card setup, which means service charges, late fees, and an interest rate could go skyhigh if you one minute late on payment or if they decide to hold your early payment just so they can screw you, too many was to get screwed using a credit card for paypal, so I dont, I want to set up a prepay debit card, but the trouble is that even those have service charges, what I really hate is this constant nickle and diming these companies and the banks always find to chip away at our money
I like Paypal and always prefer to use it over other methods. However, I don’t like the idea of ebay forcing people to use it. I’m sure they’ll say it’s to protect buyers but the real reason is the bottom line. Ebay owns Paypal. By forcing people to use Paypal they collect more fees.
I have no messages from eBay and can’t find anything on the site stating PayPal use is required.
I use PP almost exclusivly on eBay, by choice.
But I can’t agree with mandating the use of PayPal. It should be up to the seller to determine what form of payment is acceptable.
Just another sign of today’s economy…squeeze every nickle you can out of everyone you can.
Ralph
Having been on eBay since 25th Dec 1997, many changes but there usually a way around most obstacles. They can’t stop communication between parties and then you can do USPS postal money orders and cash them prior to sending anything. I even take personal checks if it is from the bank I use. Just walk in and straight cash it, again before shipping. Works for me everytime.
Cheers, the old fardt in Ore-Gun
No problems with PayPal here. Credit cards are just a back up if you chose it. They prefer direct bank account withdrawals. I had a problem with a fraudulent seller and I had my money back in a week after the complaint was filed. Can’t ask for better than that.

Ebay: “Checks, money orders, and bank wire transfers are not allowed for most eBay purchases.”
Works for me. Several times I have won a bid on an item only to discover the seller required a money order or bank check. Not good. No control over what happens next. That is no longer the case–and that IS good. I NEVER have a problem with PayPal.
The problem for a seller with PayPal is that PayPal/eBay automatically side with the buyer when a problem occurs and usually find in favour of the buyer in a dispute. The seller must prove delivery. In many cases, this is not feasible as tracking is quite expensive outside of the States and few are prepared to pay for it. Insurance is also difficult as the USPS are reluctant to payup with international claims. For the seller it is very much a onesided transaction, as the buyer using PayPal is holding most of the cards in the deck.
Don’tcha just love how the way free enterpirise works sometimes.

I guess, like any other endeavor in REAL life, huge numbers of sellers are willing to take that risk. So, yes, I am among those (many) who "just love(s) how the way (?) free enterprise (sp corrected) works sometimes" (?).

That’s me all over.
Brilliant idea mucked up by sloppy attention to detail.
Ron Simpson said:PayPal can and will issue a refund to the buyer for a product received and will do absolutly nothing to insure the buyer returns the product they receive the refund for. Just because there is no shortage of sellers does not make eBay's policy of PayPal only a good policy. As the biggest online marketplace eBay can do as it pleases. I will not sell any expensive items on eBay because of this new policy. I can survive being screwed out of $100-$200. Anything I will have for sale above this threshold will be sold elsewhere. If you are a seller, and you have to use paypal which you will, you are protected against evil bayer’s who are buyers, no pun intended, if you are a buyer and don’t want to use paypal, just contact seller prior to the end of an auction, and just ASK them if they will accept m.o. or cashiers checks they will inform you and IF you win the auction you know ahead of time what to do when it ends. When and IF you win just send them the payment in the mail. Very simple

Jerry,
That no longer works.
The Evilbay computers track the entire transaction.
That is why my bookseller is pissed.
All listings, except automotive, real estate, and a few big ticket items, go directly thru Paypal.
If he or any other seller lists an item, it is tracked all the way to see if the buyer used paypal.
That is why I can’t buy the book thru e-bay.
They got you by the Kahunas.
OK,
Yesterday, all I did was look around the paypal section of Evilbay. I did not link out of their site at all.
This morning, I had two spam emails concerning Paypal.
You tell me that no one is trying to hack the Ebay pay pal site?
They prolly have banks of computers set up in some sleazy warehouse, trying 24 hours a day to hack your pay pal account.
Safe huh?
Let’s hope I don’t have to say, “I told you so” in the near future.
