Got some information about the Silverton & Durango Railroad. Don’t know if it is true or not, but on September 1st there is going to be a big announcement.
Can you guess what it is?

Marklin is taking over?
a)Rename it the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad?
b)bringing out a comprehensive range of ‘G’ gauge railroad track and ties compatible with an existing (?) well known manufacturer.
c)will be regauging to standard gauge?
Mebbe they are going to fire up an old 2-8-0 they’ve been restoring…

THEY HAVE NOT BEING RESTORING THAT 2-8-0, it was done by a volunteer group…but it is being run for the first time on the D&S. It is #315.
and, on a similar note, talked to a fellow today who visited Georgetown Loop in the last 5 days, says their engine is broken, and there are interesting cost negotiations with the State.
Fred Mills said:Phred, The term "They" could mean anybody! D&S, or a group. And who's to say a member of this said group isn't employed by the D&S in one way or another. TOG

Aliens.
Re: Georgetown Loop #12 (the ex-Hawaiian 2-6-2) is back up and running on the loop as of this past week, according to the railroad’s web site and the Narrow Gauge Discussion Forum. She was not running for a short while, and was due to have her boiler inspected on the 22nd of this month before getting the okay to return to service. Evidently she passed and is hauling passengers again. http://www.georgetownlooprr.com/ #9 (C&S, ex. DSP&P) is out of service, awaiting a contract for her re-rebuilding. (Long, complicated story with more sides and spin than the LGB saga.) My recommendation - if you go, board at Georgetown. If you have to walk back, it’s easier downhill. And even if you don’t have to hoof it, the hike/bike trail from Georgetown to Silver Plume offers some fantastic vantage points for photographing the railroad.
Re: #315 Official web site: http://www.drhs315.org/ Great to see another loco back in steam. She’s supposed to be running on the C&TS next year, so I think I’ll try to catch her there. I may make it to Durango in October, but unless it’s some strange twist of fate, she probably won’t be running. Later, K
Thanks for posting those photos Kevin , its almost like I have seen locomotives that look something like that somewhere ? : - )
I have not hear of anything being announced on the 1st, can not think of anything that D&S operate that could operate on the Georgetown, perhaps Al is adding it to his collection!
I think it could be some time before 315 is fully operational hauling traffic, still tweaking to be done.
David,
Right from the horses mouth, eh?
It’s nice to have a member of LSC living right in Durango.

How tight is muleshoe curve on the C&TS? That’s pretty tight, though nowhere near 30° I don’t think.

Kevin, what does a 30 degree curve mean? I know that the Martin Creek Tunnel on the old Great Northern, made obsolete by the present 7.8+ mile tunnel, has a 100 degree curve, but I never knew what that meant.
Can you esplain, slowly?
Ok guys you hijacked this post. Back on the original topic.
It ain’t Sept 1, yet.

I asked around, nobod had heard anything, I did get the dirt on Georgetown.
Sounds like they did a quick and dirty on No 9 and ae now paying the consequences
Clearly, Steve Featherkile gets the quick thinking award for this Marklin response.
Love it.
Ah, er, back to a topic of tourist RRs – with a question:
Durango would lose big as a tourist destination point if their railroad was endangered. I think there is considerable financial protection – unfortunately, not all tourist RRs have that strong of a connection as a tourist destination feature.
Hopefully cities with little used railroad right-of-ways would consider negotiating tourist use when used only twice a week by small short-run freights. A nearby town of Fullerton has a twice-weekly industrial run for some 10 miles through a hillside park-like setting that would likely fill a couple of “tourists in-open-flat car” runs on the weekend.
Anyone know of recent successes in persuading a RR on using seldom used rail for weekend tourist runs?
