<Snip Anyone know of recent successes in persuading a RR on using seldom used rail for weekend tourist runs?

The Berkshire Scenic Railway in Massachusetts negotiated such rights with the Housatonic Railroad Company 4-5 years ago. I think there was some legal wrangling in court before the railroad would give the rights. Now they are the best of friends. The HRRC now loaned it’s RS-3 to the tourist line, but now borrows it back during the week as fill in power.

Jon,

Thanks for the data.
Are you or have you been active with the Berkshire Scenic Railway.
I was hoping for a name or phone number.
The club’s persuasive strategy is one I am interested in.
Thanks,
Wendell

Steve,

Go here for 30 degree curve info…

I’m not a member - never even ridden their train. I’m on the Housatonic discussion list which is where I heard of it. There website is http://www.berkshirescenicrailroad.org/index.php - probably can get a contact name there.

Evening of 9/1 - what was the big news?

…Ric…I’m waiting also…but while I’m waiting; I’m trying to figure how to get a K class into the copier, in order to shrink it to 1:22.5

In any case, it’s a grand day here, and Gord just called to say he is coming over to run a train. So; I’d better get off the 'puter and into the “train running mood”…!!!

I think it was the press release stating that the operators of the D&S have been selected to operate the Texas State Railroad. See Dennis' post of 8/30/07 which included a link to the pdf of the press release.

that’s it? Well, I guess that is big news to some. Hope it brings them a grin. I’m not dissapointed, but I guess I expected more. I am happy for them, if that is what they wanted.

I find it interesting that amongst the mass exodus to 1.20.3 in some quarters, that some of us in the wilderness, still find 1.22.5 as good as it ever was.

Res ispa loquitur, as they say.

cheers

If you have somewhat limited space, 1:22 is the way to go. 1:20 does need more room. When I first got my Connie it went for a run on an LGB layout…and, shall we say that it cleared a new right of way…:?

Those that have not prepared for the large K’s in advance are going to be very disappointed when they get it home and it won’t make it around their layouts. We have a club member that bought an Accucraft K and discovered that he had one expensive shelf queen because it wouldn’t fit around his layout.

I’m with you guys…I’m in 1:22.5 for the long haul. I did start a collection of the AMS, 1:20.3 rolling stock, along with the new B’mann stuff; and it is great, but the idea of operating the stuff is out of the question. It is far too delicate.

I’m keeping one of each car and will probably get one each of the tank cars and gondolas, but strictly as display models. I have a spare Connie, that has never seen daylight that will head up the string. The K is out of the question unless the street price is around $750, but it will be for display only.

I have 4 Annies, and two Connies, along with an LGB Mogul, that carry the load in the NG operations in 1:22.5. They are all dependable and well worth their weght.

The 1:22.5 rolling stock is detailed enough to look fine, and serves me well. It is a combination of LGB, B’mann, Delton and USTrains, along with a few scratch built cars.

The new 1:20.3 stuff is well detailed and wonderful for those that want display items, or indoor equipment; but out-of-doors it will leave a roadbed of parts falling off. It will also be a storage problem, as using the boxes they came in only leads to more parts being knocked off…

Storing them on track in a true operating situation is not practicle.

My thoughts…

I guess I’m in 1:22.5 for ever too.
Except for a couple 1/29 dismals, all my motive power is 22.5

If I found a sack of cash in the driveway this morning, I would definitely go on the search for Astor or LGB/Astor 1:22.5 instead of Accucraft.

Wrong size for the gauge, you say. I don’t care. I can’t count, so rivets mean nothing to me.
