Do you really want a forum?

Quite a number of the members of this forum are now using email for questions that should really be asked on the forum .
Naturally , the answers are also appearing as emails .
If you want this forum to survive , and I suspect there is a move to destabilise it , is this the way we should be going ?
There are members who delight in hijacking , taking the pith , and generally being obnoxious .
If you stop answering their posts , they will be alone—again in some cases . Because these idiots jump from forum to forum seemingly intent on mischief . They even behave properly for a while before showing true colours .
Just a thought . I hope it makes you think , too .
If anyone cares to tap my 60 or more years model making experience , email via the site to show Bob your support .
I have answered 5 emails on On30 since 1300 local . It’s now 2330 .
Those five emails should have been on site .
Shame .
I now have some more train stuff to answer .
Mike

Sorry, but we are all out of PITA and PISA.

Human nature to some degree has flaws and most of us now and then go out of line too far. I would hope we could enjoy just chatting about trains but there always is the destructive side like the LGB fiasco going on. Who knows how that is going to turn out ? Not much we can do so why not just wait an see ?

Other than private emails, I do like to see people’s questions and the answers they receive be right here on LSC for it just might help someone that was wondering the same thing. Lordy knows the information that I have soaked up in the last couple years and I’ve been playing with trains since the early 50’s… Talk about the coupler situation in HO when then, there a dozen different couplers and most of them were non-compatible with each other !!!
Now days that would have really started the mother of all flame wars.

Okay nuff said,

Darryl,

Precisely! and it shows in the threads:

Where there was nothing but a juxtaposition of the different texts in German and English.

Where there was a discussion on the relative merits of eBay for bargains.

Where there was nothing but how I kitbash a LGB item into a RhB Baggage car.

Where there was nothing but “Holy Crap. LGB files for German bankruptcy protection-hostile takeover” under discussion

Where there was nothing as a topic but a Kadee Coupler Height gauge

Same in "Slow boat to China…???

Same in “Bashing or critique”

Same in “Just the start…??”

And on and on, all one needs do is look for the postings of PITA (aka Mike M) and PISA (aka Zirner)

And the “real fun” started in “A different marketing approach”

As Schultz used to say “Werry interrrresting”

PS the email has been quite busy at this end, too. Both to the personal email listed in my profile, as well as the business address!!

HJ, your PITA image is uncalled for, his question was a legitimate one. I’ve fielded lots of questions via email myself, because people are afraid of ruffling someone’s feathers in the forum. Knock it off.

I agree, although I learned something about the venerable Kadee gauge I did not know. Even suffering the embarassment of making a huge math error, it was worth it.

I guess it was in the wrong forum?

Greg,

It wasn’t in the wrong forum and it didn’t get derailed.

Mike.

I’ve been watching this crap for a while.
And wondering why a couple seem to just want to egg someone on, and inflame a situation.

So, since you started this thread, I would ask:

What do you see as the intent of these people on this forum?
And, one of them on another?

Do you see the constant jabbing at one or two as an attempt to kill this website off?

Or, do you think they are basically clueless?

Just wondering.

Of course, I have my own idea of who the troublemakers are.

One of them decided to take me on in another forum, and I was civil and courteous.

And he had all his posts yanked in that thread.

It seems civility is the issue.

Would you or anyone else talk to folks face-to-face the way some who hide behind the annonymity of their monitors do?

If someone had done some of this stuff to my face, in my yard, others would read about it in the morning paper.

Just stop and think before you send.

Often, in a “hot” topic, my posts will sit for up to an hour on-screen, as I walk through and look, think, MODIFY, before I post.

Other times, I do, in fact, shoot from the hip.
And since I know HOW to shoot from the hip, I generally hit my target.

Altho, one instance took others about 10 months to see.

Now I await your response.

If I didn’t want this forum, I would not be here. Simple as that. But I do think the jabbing at each other has gone far too far. My concern is what will newbies think. It’s my opinion that one look and they would stay as far away as possible. We need this hobby to grow. We need to be comitted to helping each other as well as the newbies. We need to ALL get along. This is the ONLY way that this hobby will grow, and growth will benefit everyone. Without growth sales of trains will stagnate and manufacturers will suffer…most likely fatally.

Be thankful that I am not a moderator here. I have no problems with locking an article and if the problem moved elsewhere on the board I would have no problems deleting an account or two. I’m an administrator elsewhere (OT) and have had to do just as I say.

I personally think there are at least a couple of apologies due to the members of the board and then we need to get on with the reason we are all here…a friendly discussion of trains…

Warren

Hi,

my first contribution in this forum was the question to Mr. Mueller, if he could please show something of his LGB bashings/modelling he is talking about for years.

Instead of simply showing an example of his work, Mr. Mueller started a war and a personal propaganda campaign against me and my work. Some jumped on that train.

Only a few hours later he started with his Swiss waggon modelling over here, which looks quite interesting.

At the moment it even sounds like an anti-foreigner campaign is going on in here. The “Krautzenheimer” offense in annother thread might sound funny in different circumstance, but in this case it seems like very cheap anti-German-propaganda.

Mike asks “Do you really want a forum?” Yes, I want fori with lot of LS train related stuff.

I don´t want a forum with thousands of “General Discussion” contributions on bear manure or made up stories about EPL/LGB moulds on their way to China. I do not feel at home in such a surrounding.

On the other hand there are only a few contributions on modelling. A lot of the modelling stuff is published in other fori at the same time or earlier. So why should I read or discuss them here.

Have a good time

Juergen Zirner

Dave ,
It would make it a lot easier when you post a list of questions to number them , then it makes answering unambiguous .
Try to match these answers to the questions , they are in the right order .

  1. Self aggrandisement at someone else’s expense in one case ; the revelation of the truth in another .
  2. By one of them , yes .
  3. No , neither are clueless .
  4. I thought he yanked his own posts
  5. Civility includes treating others as you would like to be treated .

Dave , I hope my response was worth waiting for . You will note that I did not respond by bringing up the past again .

I did not respond by taking the oppurtunity for another dig at someone .

Look at the dictionary definition of Curmudgeon if you wonder why I do not use the term when addressing you . It is uncivil .

Thank you both for your insightful responses into your inner beings.

It does give some pause at the wonderment.

I see from one a possible departure.

Hm.

Comment not made.

Oh, another thing.

The “speculation” on this forum pales in comparison to several others.

Absolutely pales.

And, the bit complained about “molds”…
“made up stories about EPL/LGB moulds on their way to China.”

Nobody on this forum made that up.
I can guarantee you that.

It was discussed.

This is, as far as English as a primary language forum, is the ONLY place where actual translated items appear, unless these are copied or linked to other forums.

I do recall the first post on this forum by one, who immediately received a warning from the site owner.
Playing poor picked upon foreigner won’t cut it.

“Zirner
Thats not a way to start off your first post on LSC. Keep it civil, please.”

http://www.largescalecentral.com/LSCForums/viewtopic.php?id=6472&p=2

So.
One can look back as to where the problems began, and the dates seem to coincide fairly closely.

Oh, and Mike, he changed one, they yanked two.

In response to the original question, here’s one possible suggestion.

The general forum could be renamed to the public forum, and everything not specifically about large scale trains goes there.

Likewise, nothing other than specifically about trains would be allowed in the track, rolling stock, motive power, DCC, etc. forums.

Then for me, all I do is ignore the public forum, and also, for example the steam forum, since I do not do steam (yet). I’m so busy reading other forums, that the personal chitchat is not a high priority, nor who is visiting whose house, and definitely not political or other way-off-trains topics.

Of course, this might require a higher level of moderation activity. I own or moderate about 6 forums. Many of the forums have 5 moderators who can get pretty busy. It can be done.

Just some thoughts on the original question.

Regards, Greg

Greg,

Yes, that would work. But let me ask you this, why should anyone have to do the extra work if this forum didn’t need it in the past?

I’ve been reading and posting here since 2002-04-03 and I don’t recall seeing this kind of problem in the past.

This year…???

And yet another thread is hijacked for personal attacks .

Greg ( In response to the original question, here’s one possible suggestion.

Now there is a good idea but alas with no one to read the gossip or other banter, it would fade into the sunset. I still like the idea anyway.

Cheers,

Damn it, Mike, NOBODY hijacked this to a personal attack.

Gain a cell, dude.

Darryl , Greg ,
I thank you for trying to keep to the point . I was going to (laughingly) suggest a forum called

HERE'S WHERE YA THROW SHIT AT PEOPLE

Perhaps it’s not such a laugh after all .

Dave ,
Well , there ya go ,
Mike
