Is the last line necessary to promote board civility? Or just a grenade toss to see who complains?
It’s stuff like that last line that creates the hate and discontent folks have been discussing on these very forums, don’t you think?
Could just be a light hearted attempt at humor about the situation as of late on the forum.
But you can spin it however you need.
Mark,
you cannot help yourself can you. I do agree with Dave. Was this posting merely intended to create another flame war? I will be surprised if any fall for your trap as it is so blatant.
Edit: the post thread prior this you were postulating as to how possibly you may be a ‘better man’. I know that it was one post thread ago, maybe an eternity in internet time but I really thought the feelings expressed there may have been on a positive note. Alas, one posting later the same old tripe. NO there was no humour in this thread. Maybe, just maybe, let your personal feelings aside and let common sense be your guide.

As an attempt at humour, based upon other forum postings decrying such commentary, it has failed.
Spin is not something I do.
You should know that.
I deal in facts.
And Mark has earned himself a 14-day account suspension.
Lest anyone else think I’m just fooling around, I’m at my limit of patience. Dont continue to push me, or the site rules.
Behave.
Thank you Bob.
Does this mean we can now talk about the story?
Personally I am appalled. Alot of folks will see this as wanton vandalism…I don’t. I see environmental terrorism pure and simple. Someone wants the railroad out of the way and are now trying to resort to vandalism. I hate to say it but unless they catch the crim’s soon it will only get more violent .
I consider myself an environmentally very person …but this kind of behavior is heinous.
Thank you, Bob.
Copper Vic.
Locomotives have tons of it. Well not tons literally, but metaphorically. Traction motor cables are quite large and I would assume would attract a pretty price on the second hand market. Plus most locomotives are unlocked, and unoccupied for long amounts of time, especially a tourist RR. Plus the wiring in the cab is pretty easy to access behind the back panel.
I’m with Craig – it’s copper theft, not vandalism. Surprising that the reporter / law enforcement sources did not bring that forward.
We had that problem a lot with the phone company. Surprising the lengths some people went to to steal the stuff…right off the poles…
Phone cables…pshaw…We’ve had them steal the POWER LINES down here…and yes some of them won a Darwin Award for their troubles…
Owning Property in that region, I have been following this debate on the trails from rails on that line. The tree huggers are out in full force, with funding from outside people. Yes there are a vocal few business people that favor turning the line into trail, mostly the snowmobile groups, and those that think that only on foot people should ever be allowed off the road way, some think that the trail should be off limits to even bicycles. Since it is a “Protected” park, there will be no drilling for gas, and this is the only cause that these huggers have currently, it gets all there attention.
I do believe it was an act of environmental terrorism. I think that when all the facts come out, All the copper will still be there. These are the same folks that admit to spiking trees, knowing that someone can be killed by there actions. And yet they continue to do it.
If the recycling companies would only get together and devalue copper to “0” value, this crap would stop.
Problem is, copper is a valuable metal. It will never be valued at zero.
I would say that recycling companies could ask a few questions, when someone brings in a roll of copper.
The local recycling companies around here are doing just that. They are looking at whatever your bringing in and asking things like, “Where did you get all that wire?” If the person seems suspicious they report it to the police.
Yeah Jake, they do that here also. The recycler I use does a sort of identification (with pic, driver license, etc) on file and once you check in the first time, you can recycle anything without any problem. I’ve seen the sheriff there a couple times, cuffing up scroungy looking copper thiefs.

This was my immediate thought, too. Note that the article does not suggest theft of any kind, only “damage” to the wiring. I submit that the action was perpetrated by those who want to see the rails removed and a trail created. If you want to call that an act of Eco-Terrorism, I certainly have no problem with that.
If I was the Local LEO, I would immediately go lean on the leader of the group who supports the removal of the rails, give him a perp walk, and see what shakes out.
Copper is one item that is valuable…aluminum is another. We actually had a truck loaded to take a few hundred small forgings (maybe 3-6 pounds each) loaded on a pallet ready to go to heat-treat. During the night, some folks climbed the fence and stole a large amount of them. The “bottom of the gene pool” crowd then took them to a local recycling place where they were promptly arrested. The dealer knew what the items were. It takes all kinds!
Here in Florida, the recyclers are REQUIRED to verify photo ID for ALL recycling, and when you collect your funds, you must first roll your thumb or no deal. The reputable recyclers also ask questions when items look suspicious.
