Bob, I like the idea of “aging” the negative reputation count. Right now, people can go on a rampage and bang on it.
How I view it is a way to say “boy that was really dumb”… if people consistently keep doing dumb things (like going on and on about a locked thread (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)) then their negative reputation will kind of always “be there”.
If it is a way to help people sort of anonomously let people know (non confrontive) that the consensus is that their comments/posts are not appreciated, and it is taken to heart, then it will be a temporary thing, and help the forum self-police in a more courteous manner.
So, I think it might make a lot of sense to “age” negatives.
Regards, Greg
I think the entire “reputation” thing isn’t necessary. Just my opinion.

Nope, the rep system bug was fixed.
That said, Im pondering “expiring” reputation after 30/60/90/some-number of days… Opinions?
Since it seems to be a “bone of contention” many (most?) of us would probably not miss it. I haven’t really worried about it, life’s too short for that, but it has that “I didn’t get a Valentine” and “I got a lump of coal” similarity.
OTOH topics with a “no train/model train content” theme getting locked is spot on. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)
What he said.

I feel it would be better to rate posts, not the poster. Then it’s closer to merits than personalities.
John
I like the aging idea, keeps it more fair and allows one to change thier ways and loose the negative rep.
@Greg - I don’t belive the reputation system is anonymous. You get a notification in your Updates that rep points were given and by whom. So far, I only have direct experience with posative points so I could be wrong about the negative points.

I might agree if you could rate individual posts, but the way the rating system is now you can only rate a thread.
I like Bruce Chandler’s reasoning…I support that…
I fall into the “I don’t care either way” club. Keep em delete em, I’m still gonna read what I want regardless of the persons rating. But honestly, I think it will just brew more bad feelings and fights.

All I received was a notification that I received a reputation , but it did not say who it was from or if it was positive or negative

But you can say “Thank you” for a particular post and that gets attached to that post complete with the name.
See if this works:

Too true, but you have to put this in context. Remember why Bob put this in place. As a group we seem to need some method of policing ourselves. I’m not sure that there’s anything better.
Unless Bob has changed things, I got 2 negative reps from the same person and I was noitfied in the updates as to who sent them. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-yell.gif)
