Large Scale Central

Devon's hat-in-the-ring mining facility.

Okay I see it now and that is pretty damn ingenious really. Won’t work for a free hanging bucket design. But it is kinda cool really. The weight of the bucket keeps the breaks disengaged and when the rope breaks it releases tension on the springs forcing the breaks outward to catch on the ratchet system. Cool.

Thanks John.

Thanks for sharing the head frame drawings, Devon. At some point, I want to build a mine and those drawings will come in handy.

Read this. This is where I got the info from. It has some good info. This is specifically on the dumping system but the whole book has some good stuff on building mines especially timbering it.

That will be a great resource, Devon. Thanks for sharing.

Google books is my friend. They have all sorts of free ebooks from yesteryear. Especially technical journals and such from the day. RR, mining, logging, industrial. All sorts of good stuff. The hard part is locating them when you don’t know what exists

First off let me say I will finish this challenge if it kills me; and it just might. Sounds like we are all running into health issues for the challenge. I am in the midst of a relapse of my brain thing. Over the weekend I developed the none stop pressure headaches again. I am basically back to where I was pre surgery. Now I am not overly concerned because I was told this WOULD happen. Not might, but would. I was just hoping for more than three months. I was praying for ten years. Now I also don’t know if it is an adjustment issue with the valve or an actual problem. Either way it is fixable. Calling the doc today. But with that I have resolved to finish my project. I have come to far to not.

So progress was slow over the weekend; between the above and my kid playing a hockey tournament. But I got close to where I wanted to be. I wanted the winch house finished. It still needs half a roof and guard rails and ladders. But thats busy work and wont take long. I will finish it before the weekend. Then I will make the head frame next weekend and ad some of the details as time permits. Major landscaping won’t happen but never really intended for that to be a part of my build.

First half of the roof on, water tank installed with cat walk.

interior shot of wood pile

The beautiful steam winch built by Dick Whitney. I changed the color from a greenish to black and weathered it. I also added some plumbing and wire on the spool. But the rest is all Dick’s. Finally one of the interior details will be a barrel of oil. So here is my inspiration a period Texaco gear lubricant barrel.

and my start on it

I will have to hand cut a stencil for the lettering as my decals don’t look good since the printer I have now prints transparent ink and it looks like crap on clear decal paper. They look okay on white decal paper so the emblem I will be able to print I think and also the “Texaco” but the “The Texas Company” I won’t be able to do and match the green on white paper. I have thought about making a single decal on white paper that would cover the entire green portion of the barrel with a green background. For that matter I could make an entire decal for the whole barrel making a single barrel wrap. We will see. I am willing to perfectt he technique as I want several of these barrels all over the layout.

Edited to say boy from a close up child’s perspective i can see a lot of white caulk and shiny metal that needs dealt with

Hey buddy, just make that old can rustier where you can’t do the lettering… sure looks like the wooden barrels at Ace…(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif) yep my junk box stuffers!

This is a cast resin barrel that I have no idea where I got it. I will make a mold before final assembly. Well I got luckier than I thought with the lettering. I did some messing around with my favorite photo editing/drawing program, Powerpoint, and came up with what i think will work great. It starts with a pilfered Texaco emblem from around the right time period. (bonus points if someone can identify why this isn’t the 1936 logo but actually a later one). It is a later logo the 1936 one is a tad different I think this one is fromt he 50’s and I am modeling the 40’s. I am sticking with this one.

I then made a solid logo that would wrap the entire barrel.

I had to mess with the colors so that the printed color would match the painted color. If you haven’t done much decal printing your computer screen and your printer don’t always agree on the color of your picture. In this case my work’s laser printer prints a much darker green. Likely my inkjet will print this in a different color and I will have to adjust it again. The reason i need it to match is the bands and bottom will be painted. But at any rate I printed it as a single decal and then cut it into three bands. I just used regular paper here at work and taped them. The real deal will be three water slide decals.

I will rust up the barrel and add a pump. This is almost exactly what I want it to look like

Dang I need some details on my build ! Great hjob

Hjob? is that a Muslim thing?

Don’t think so, in my case it’s a Fat Finger thing(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Need to weather and rust the barrel but here it is with decals. I love close up pictures shows your every mistake. My decal application leaves a little to be desired but from a foot away looks great.

The color match to tot he paint is pretty dang close even on the close up shot. From a foot away with shadows its spot on. Some rust, dust, and an oil spill on top and this will look awesome. I want to make a hand crank pump for it also.

I have become so wrapped up in details I am forgetting the big picture. I also ran out of tin and placed another order for that cheap import crap instead of quality Taylor tin. I have it weathered and it is in need of gluing on. I need to make a roof jack for the smoke stack . I need to fiddle with some sort of railing and finish the ladders. then I can call the winch house done. The there is the whole head frame to build. Good thing the competition doesn’t end until March 13th, right?

My birthday? Naw I would’ve remembered that!(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)

Hey I remember! We have a week left!!!(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif) My little bridge is so simple, where as my crate would have been a Masterpiece, that I decided to give myself a week instead of your eon.(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif) Just to make if more fairer.

Can’t get unstuck from the details. I want a barrel transfer pump and had an idea of what I wanted base of modern hand crank transfer pumps. But I also wanted it to fill and oil can. Well I was googling and came across this:

I found a couple of pictures of very similar designs. Place to set your can and if it leaks it drains back to the barrel. Pretty cool and will be fun to make.

Well the final weekend. I will be out of town Monday -Thur of next week so this is my final push. I might just make it. Head hurts but I am not giving up. Here is the barrel all weatherd.

I think it looks pretty authentic. Working on a pump for it like the one above.

But I also had to get to work on the head frame. I had already cut the remaining 2X4 into stock for it last weekend. Today was the beginning of cut and assemble

And here are a couple detail parts. The hinge mechanism for the tipping table and a steam whistle for the roof of the winch house.

I hope tomorrow to finish all the headframe framing and get some stain on it. Then the rest of Sat and all day Sunday I will finish all the detail work. I do believe I will make it.

Very nice job on the barrel. I like the rust the best. And great progress on the headframe. That’s a days work there, that is.

Looks great!

Headframe looks good, Devon and the barrel looks like the original. Interested to see how the tipping table turns out.

boy you are one to be pointing fingers, angle fish among others !!! And no hjob is not Muslim it’s good old American with a bad accent… or fat fingers on a small screen

edit to fix fat finger double post , so as to not derail one of Devon’s threads . That has never happened before so I sure don’t want to be the first to do that.! The barrel looks awesome and the hand crank pump should at least spin the handle around! I should delete that comment , you don’t have time to do that!

I had a college roommate who began letters* to his girlfriend back home with “Dear Angle,” but I never said anything of course.

*anybody remember writing letters???

Not to derail the discussion or anything…(https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

I think I typed my last letter about 1993. I typed it on my Mac and had to print it out because most didn’t have an internet account.(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)
