Once you get the grout applied, It will probably look fine. I like the concept.
Wasnât going to add any actual grout. Do you think I should? I was just gonna paint it Grey and then paint the rock like above. Not sure how or what I would grout it with.
Well, you could use the vinyl concrete patch I think you got for the original idea, or you could add some sand to the grey paint and that would simulate grout. it would have to be very fine sand or otherwise it will look like boulders at our scale. The grout lines look quite deep from the photo, but that could be an optical delusion
No its no delusion they are deep. And too wide. I do have the concrete patch still but I am not sure it would adhere to to pvc enough to work. I am thinking I am just gonna roll with this. And if you want to come visit and point it out once its in the layout ill take the abuse. Lol. I am thinking the effort to make it perfect isnât worth the 10 foot rule of a small detail that in the grand scheme wonât be very obvious.
Just a thoughtâŚ
What about the organisation who owns the locomotive Mik is sitting on in the challenge photo, would they know?
From what Iâve seen so far, I suspect she would be quite chuffed.
Devon thatâs the strangest looking pizza Iâve ever seen.
i agree. no cheese, no olivesâŚ
the grout lines could be smaller and the stone a little âtighter fitâ, but that is looking good so far
Thatâs a product of not having a smaller bit. And I am not going and buying one to redo it. The ball cutter I have could use to be about half the size. But oh well. Most of it will be buried in dirt or hidden by building. So I think at the end if the day it wonât be as glaring as a close up photograph of just that.
Here is the base all glued and carved. I have started the painting. I donât have a picture but I have the four walls of the main building erected.
It does sort of have a distorted pizza look
much much better! so when should I get started on my switch stand oh grumpy bully? LOL
So end of the long weekend. It doesnât feel like I got a lot done, but actually the base was always gonna be the longest part of the journey. Itâs done. And the basic form of the main building is built. Next up will be to make the basic structure of the covered loading area over the tracks. Once that is done I can tackle the details.
Looking good Devon, pizza finish or not I think it will look great when finished off with some weathering washes.
It definitely needs some washes or something to knock down the shiny ânewnessâ of it. I like the color as we have a lot of redish tan shale type rock. But I am thinking some dirty gray or black washes would help age it some.
Another thing is a majority of its gonna be buried.
Devon, that looks much better than the first photo. Grout lines donât look near as cavernous as I originally thought. Carry on.
They are not as cavernous as the first test piece. a lighter touch with the same bit made them the same width just not as deep. and then I âoverâ painted many of the rocks to thin out the lines even more. It actually took a long while to paint that. Much longer than I imagined it would. Painted the entire stone area grey first then painted each rock individually with the darkest red brown color. Then three successive layers of ever lightening shades of color were dry brushed on. then touch ups. And as mentioned above I am really not done because it does need some weathering to make it less stark and more used looking. A combination of washes and dry powders and then a clear dull coat should mute it down nicely.
Thanks to Bill I think I need this in my life.
Yes Devon. Yes you do.
But I keep forgetting itâs winter up thereâŚ
Perhaps a hot beverage of your choice (sug. Eggnog latte with whipped cream as insulation) and some Caramelised Bacon with Pecans and Cayenne would be more suitable for venturing out into your shed during Mik-mas.
Awe heck I am over it. It warmed up, we are all good. Its a balmy 18 degrees and snowing now. Shorts and T shirt weather.
So I have cut some white egg crate lighting into six pain windows. I will glue them in wooden frames and use Roosters foil tape as the glazing behind them.
Also did a black and a brown paint wash on the base and after that dried I used several different colors of weather chalks to give the rock a much more dull and modeled look. I personally am very pleased with it.
Next up is to cut the window holes and door hole into the building and clean it up some so I can start gluing on trim and battens.
