Devon's 2024 MIK - Featherkile Furnance and Foundry Shipping Building

Excellent rock work. Looking great.

Base turned out well, Devon. Are you still going to add any “grout” (paint) to the grout lines?

Nope. After the washes and weather chalk I am fine with it. Its not a museum piece but as a base for a building that will sit in a corner of my layout half buried in dirt and covered by a building I am willing to take my lumps on imperfect grout lines.

Not a lot of visual progress (ill take some photos soon) but I do feel somewhat like I did something. The base is done. I made the five windows out of the egg crate lighting, backed them with styrene sheet covered in foil tape. Cut the holes for the windows and front door into the building and installed the five windows.

Here is where the building sits. I am not progressing as fast as I’d like.

I like what you did with the base. I have done similar and used a light grey to paint everything then a darker grey painted over in small sections and wiped away before it dries. The darker grey stays in the grout lines. I think you used a similar process with nice results.

Got the windows and doors installed and trimmed out. Need to put on the sub roof next so I can trim out the rest of the building. Still haven’t started on the lean to. Still lots to do but I do feel as if I am getting stuff done finally. Pictures tonight hopefully.

Just a photo update of the doors and beginning of trim work.

Looking good, Devon.

Need to catch up with everyone else’s builds. But between cooking and my own project I haven’t been able to keep up.

But as for me I have started the battens. Hand cutting all the trim from 1/16 basswood sheets. Larger trim is 3/8 wide and the window and door trim is about 5/16 and the battens are 3/16ths.

The area in the peak will be smallish shingles.

Almost all of the trim is done. . .whew that was a lot of battens. Need to add trim where the roof meets the sides and shingle the peaks. Then the trim on the main building will be done. Then it will be ready for paint. After paint will be the detail parts like door rollers and handles. And then roofing.

But that is only 2/3rds of the project done. I still have the entire covered loading lean-to. Now for visual interest and to.give it an “after thought” sort of look I am thinking of making the lean-to with horizontal boards instead of board and batten.

Still a long way to go.

OK so I guess when I gave Pete a bad time about his cutting technique and the potential for bleeding out I jinxed myself. But no MIK project is “right” until it’s christened in blood. Mine is now right.

For a jab to the pinky with a brand new #11 this sucker instantly gushed the red stuff. I was sort of trapped and had the wife run for paper towels. This was the puddle after only about maybe 30 seconds.

Hurts like the devil too. Stupid thing is I am not even really sure how it happened. I wasn’t even cutting anything. Was using the point of the blade to position shingles into place. Just more or less moved my hand into the blade.

It’s a small cut but must have went deep and caught a small artery or something.

Ouch those gushers aren’t fun at all.

Did you have your wife super glue you up?

Serious question since she is deaf, how did she know to run and get paper towels?

Well I couldn’t get it to stop so gave in and went to urgent care and got it stitched up. Kinda dumb for such a small cut but it just kept pouring.

As for the wife, I was on the couch watching TV while working on it. She was on the couch with me. So it was easy to get her attention.

That’s no fun getting stitched up. A few weeks back I had to take my Dad in to get sewed up after he sliced it his hand deep.

Well at least she was sitting by you. My wife just gets up and grabs the super glue when I yell, “Michelle I cut myself…” as I walk into the house.

Hope this urgent care bill doesn’t end up over $30, otherwise we’d have to dock you on the MIK project. :joy: Or maybe medical deductibles don’t count towards project totals. It might end up costing you more!:joy:

I tried convincing my wife today to let me have $150 more hobby money because I fixed a $150 instrument cluster on the car with some soldering. The jury is still out on that one.

We will see when I get the bill. It’s fresh into January so haven’t paid anything toward a deductible yet this year. No copay which I thought was odd. So as of right now it didn’t cost a thing. But I am sure it will be in the mail.

Normally I would super glue it. That’s my normal routine but while small this seemed a little more than a superglue job.

We really should have our normal budget and then a ER rider for the MIK. 30 bucks in materials and 150 in medical expenditures

So far you are the only one who has documented putting “blood, sweat and tears” into the Mik!

Yeeouch to your finger ! I have a few nicks on my hands and my finger got a bit too close to the belt sander when I was sanding down a rough piece of siding and my finger nail was filed but there wasn’t any blood.

All of those battens are making for a nice looking building.

Geez, I cut my fingers more times than I can remember but I’ve never had a oil gusher before :hushed:
