Intense model, can’t wait to see it finished.
Today was a good modeling day. Got my Cricut running again and was able to make stencils after my decals did not work worth a damn. Hand painted stenciled letters was always what I wanted and I got it and they look good.
Because of the decal fiasco, where I had painted white for the letters, I now needed to cover that up so painted it black and then stenciled the white letters on. I like the look of a recycled/re-lettered car. Another break through idea came with not being satisfied with the truck color. Or even the level of gunk build up. I have sprayed matte clear and then used powdered chalks to build up some gunk. I ran with this idea and sifted some real dirt down to a fine powder. I sprayed the trucks with a satin caramel paint and then dusted on the dirt powder. I did two layers. I think they look way way better now.
Killed the red and gave it a dusty dirty look. I will matte clear them just to help fix it in place.
Lettering looks good, Devon. Much better on the trucks. They no longer look painted, much more natural.
Those trucks look terrific now Devon. Might you apply that to parts of your engine and other metal work higher up?
The lettering came out really well. I too like the “painted over” look. It looks more used that way…

I won’t be using the dirt higher up, but I will apply other weathering chalk. I think the chalkboard paint has so much tooth that the weathering chalks will build up nice. When sifting the dirt I ran it through window screen first to get out the big stuff then through another real fine mesh to get the powder. What was left between the big screen and the fine screen makes a real nice scale crushed gravel. So might see a few pockets of gravel in the corners and hear and there.
I will come in under the time limit. All I really have to do at this point is install the truss rods and weather it up some more. Since I messed up and did not allow for the 906 coupler I have ordered a sill mounted coupler and it won’t be here until next week. I have a few more detail parts I want to add also. But it will get done by Sunday sans couplers.

I sure like weathering with chalks. They sure add a depth and warmth to the colors.

John I have reached new heights, and I do think this is one of the best models I have made. I am constantly learning new techniques and new ways to apply old ones. And that is almost entirely because of the advice and constructive criticism I get here. People see what I don’t and the fix almost always is more pleasing and teaches me new things to try later.
Oh man Devon, I just had a look at your cranes glamour photos and I got a semi chub! Your crane is amazing !

Got the couplers yesterday. Hopefully get them installed today.

I knew your just giving me heck. I need it. My sense of humor is keeping me going.i had fun with the challenge of was a great distraction. But anymore I dont do anything I dont have to or want to do.
Every aspect of that is fabulous, and the weathering just makes it so realistic!
