Destruction, and violence

I just raised a stink on another forum, on the promotion of violence and destruction…not a good way to promote the hobby, but some seem to think it is “Fun”…
I imagine that I will be banned from their “Playhouse”, over it; but after the latest bit of stupidity in Montreal, I can’t see the promotion of destruction, using any mode of projectiles, as a way to promote this hobby of Model Railroading.

Some things just seem to stick in my “Craw”…

Hi Fred,

It must be the cultural difference, one of the reasons why people choose the Great White North!

BTW interesting spelling in some of those posts, too.

Fr. Fred,

WOW, that thread sure has added “value”!! I wonder what that would do if it’s bottled?

Oh the thought of the flames reaching new heights…

I do see where some like Fr Fred who think the subject is not appropriate and the others deem it okay. I guess it lies in the eyes of the beholder to see it their way. Everyone’s right and no one is wrong, nahhh.

I was thinking more in line with the kids falling over the fence and getting hurt then waiting for that lawsuit to follow…

And how do you see it ?

Cheers,

I am sorry about Montreal - a terrible tragedy.

That target car was created months ago and the “weapons” are pretty harmless - plastic bb firing airsoft guns [hence the name]. You can’t destroy anything with those shown in the photo - they have a lot less power than throwing a rock or a traditional bb gun. As stated, falling off the fence is by far a greater concern based on the photo.

Just remember, any time some moron decides he’s gonna go into a (your choice of site) and shoot up a bunch of people, if those being shot at either HAD the right or EXERCISED the right to keep and BEAR, one or two shots and he/she would be dead.

They pass laws around here so you cannot carry on a schoolground.
What does that do?
Tells the bad guys nobody will oppose them.

Years ago they did the same thing with bars.

Only those intent on wanton destruction now have any type of concealed weapon in a bar.

Unless you choose to ignore the law, and if someone DOES open up (or try to create a hostage situation), and you stop it, YOU get arrested.

Just remember that.

And, it’s better to be judged by 12 than to be carried by 6.

The Shooting in the Great North, was another sad day for humanity. Just last week here in the Upstate of SC a young woman shot her neighbor, (point blank up through chin) another young woman who just happened to be 6mo. pregnant. The Mom died but the baby has survived thus far. The loss is still the same. Life is a divine gift and must be respected and protected.

I personally saw nothing wrong with any of the pics…Kids climb fences, play guns-swords-fight-whatever. This way the environment is controlled and as a side benefit the kids will prob not mess with the guys trains now because they “like him”.

The one-thing folks always seem to forget is that the gun is an inanimate object, just like a sink faucet. It cannot will itself to do anything. The water will not flow without something or someone turning it on, as well the gun will not fire if not loaded, the bullet chambered and the trigger pulled. I am under the impression that in CA there is no Private Gun Ownership…so that means this idiot came about the guns in an illegal fashion. That is the crux of the entire debate; criminals will do anything necessary to achieve the goal in front of them. Whether by IED, RPG, Box Cutters, Pocket Knives, fingernail files, Cars, Fertilizer, Pointed Finger in a coat pocket…the list could reach from here to Heaven.

My kids play with toy guns…My eldest loves to be “Stony Davis, from the Great State of Texas” and wear his “real” boots, hat, holster, and carry his lasso. He “shoots” the paper caps, but he calls them “smoke”…“Dad, I need some more smoke”. Boys are built with that in them…don’t ask why, I don’t know…why do they push a car around and make noises when no one has ever taught them to do that–that is the way they are wired by the Maker.

Violence and Hatred will surround until the end, there is really nothing we can do to prevent it. To stave it off WE must raise our young to love and respect others. That will bring about the biggest societal change, and that is what we need most.

It might be noted, that I didn’t even mention so called “Gun Control” or anything about guns. All I was trying to suggest, was that to promote the hobby with young people; it would be better to avoid “Destruction” and “Violence”. It seems that most failed to see that point.

There are so many “Constructive” things about this hobby, and a world full of violence on TV, and in reality…we don’t need any more.

The only thing anyone can read into the overall responce to my posting; is an great show of “Insecurity” amungst one hell of a lot of Americans.

Even those that might have seen my point; showed that they were very worried about offending their “Gun Lobby” type friends, and wouldn’t dare to speak their minds, and risk the rath that might be thrown at them…so much for political correctness on that place, of…dare I say it and have the Commie come back…“Twits”.

End of rant…I’ll move myself into my flame-proof valt, and return after Christmas, bearing gifts of good tidings and fellowship…

I don’t know Fred…seems to me that now his neighbor kids Are interested in his trains. The way the car is setup it not made to be destroyed, but more like an old trap target that flips over if you hit the target. Not too much violence promotion there that I can see.

I also have to disagree with the “insecurity” thing; didn’t find that there or here. Just as you apparently have a distaste of firearms, others do not. I like Steam and some like Diesels. Different strokes… For us it’s all a part of living in a so-called “Free Country”.

I am surprised at how the post progressed and the fact that it hasn’t gotten more inflammatory, especially when 1 that I posted a few weeks ago about Castro’s health went nuts and got a bunch of folks in an uproar.

Howabout we Agree to Disagree?

That’s interesting. The forum I read it on has been locked…some of the pictures removed and no sign of Fr. Fred’s post…or did the guy post it on 2 different forums??? The one I saw was locked by a knappy looking bear. But…let me make a couple points clear. I do not know the definition of “Politically Correct”, and I believe in the bumper sticker that states, “If you outlaw guns, then only outlaws will have guns”. The constitutional guarantee of the right to bare arms has nothing to do with duck hunting…

Guess ya got the wrong forum. Try http://www.mylargescale.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=41440

Fr. Fred

Stay calm…You are getting too emotional for a Man of the Clothe.

You just can’t save the world…I know…I tried for 22 years…Today, there’s just too much evil.

Now, which train are we scheduled on the Milk Run for today?

I found it…and they deleted it while I was reading it…:frowning:

Did I ever say I did NOT know the definition of “Politically Correct”?

I HATE CENSORSHIP…no matter how wrong what’s being said is.

I didn’t find it the first time over there because I didn’t think it would be a “beginner” topic.

Me too! But don’t start slingin’ that word around over there, It’ll get you spanked on the hand…didn’t we just have this conversation…

I didn’t see why that topic should have been deleted, but I ain’t the boss over there either.

I guess over here we can all at least agree on one thing and that is Censorship SUX!!!

Marvin,

It isn’t about saving the world, it is about “What were they thinking??”

Now if they would use one of LGB’s dynamite cars and the kids would use a sling shot with frozen peas, that would be a different story.

Of course that’s just my opinion.

PS I wonder if there will be a follow-up on that (deleted) thread?

Now you got the Little Buggers playing with dynamite…Then they will exchange the peas for ball bearings…Soon they will follow the path of Iran and try to develop Nuclear Weapons…and then they will try to take over the World (Canada will not be spared)…Where will it end, Man?

Doesn’t matter an asteriod is currently plotted to hit the Earth on April 13, 2036…Game Over!

The Association of American Railroads would really like the ida of promoting the idea of “Shooting at trains” even if only models…

Young minds seem to drift off and get the idea that shooting at models is neat…bet shooting at the real thing would be even better…

Guns are not the problem; it's what the person behind the gun does with it; and if the person is given any idea that shooting at a train is fun........it won't make any difference if it's a model or the real thing.......

…now…take it a step farther…you might have a job as an engineer on a train…you have a wife and family at home…and some twit…shoots at your loco…just for fun…IS THIS THE FUN WE WANT TO PROMOTE…The railroad industry sure doesn’t see it that way…

Hi Fred,

Absolutely right, nor do the engineers on the trains. I talked to a few of them about just that problem relating to stones from overpasses and other “neat things”.
Back in the “good old days” in Switzerland the saying went like this “Shouldn’t blame the kids, their parents need a good slap upside the head!”

Still applies, doesn’t matter which side of the Atlantic! Reading that thread sure gave a good indication where the responsibility is missing! Ah well, that’s par for the course!

Hmn, I wonder if my LGB toy train “target car” (a euro flat with a pyramid cardboard open bulls eye and dart shootin gun) is now a collectors item.

it used to be that two parents and a career professional male teacher (usually a coach) plus a scoutmaster plus a strong sunday school program raised young men (by using the appropriate amount of alpha male dominance) to teach the youngster that he must respect his fellow human beings…

nowadays the boy is raised by a single mom, the school prescribes a dope drug at the first sign of his rambunctiousness, the scouts are history, the gym teacher is arrested for assault if he cuffs the pup, and the church is running scared if a priest is around young boys too long…and then the drug wears off.

Brave New World…

That is more (no pun inteneded) or less exactly what my hero Michael Moore says.
