Dash-9 is reborn

Bachmann announced tonight the return of the Dash-9 in 5 road names.

To let Bachmann know this is a great decision to build G scale diesels engines, go to the Bachmann website and provide positive feedback for this model and write in some other suggestions for past models.

That’s excellent news. Hopefully the SD45 will follow.

Since Bachmann doesn’t make anything for it to pull, I’m thinking the next thing will need to be the Evans cars or maybe 100 Ton hoppers?

Had this discussion a few years ago …bring back a “proper” RAILBOX or TTX paint scheme on the Evans cars…HOT seller !

MSRP $1500-1600, Street $999? That’s my bet…

Way out of my price range not that I want or need one.

Wish they would run the C-19 and some of the Spectrum cars again. Not sure I would want to pay what they would want though.

Could not find any info on the website. Be really interested in price estimates

If you have Facebook, Trainworld hosted a virtual train show with a bunch of manufacturers to announce new products.

the feed can be replayed on there Facebook page.

I don’t really understand Bachmann and there production thoughts as a company, that is why an engine like the K-27 and now the C-19 sell out and they don’t produce more to be sold to the buying public. I remember the day when you could buy a Backmann K-27 from a online seller for $650.00, yes I wish I would have bought one, but I’m also in HOn3 and was buying Blackstone products at the time and not to interested in G scale at that time. Bachmann could be like Blackstone and reissuing engine, etc. has become a real problem for them, they can’t get there product produced in China at anywhere at the cost of the original production cost. Blackstone a manufacture of HOn3 engines and rolling stock has found there is no way they can get there products produced at anywhere the cost they have paid in the past. Just to say, Blackstone said, to produce a K-28, or K-36 they would have to sell them for around $1200-$1300, who is going to pay that price for HOn3. Both Bachmann and Blackstone (Sound Traxx) have no stock on these items and it looks like they many not get anymore production on them, there production cost are just too high and the buying public is probably not going to pay double the cost for a plastic product. Blackstone and the popular Backmann products (K-27, C-19, Shays) are selling for top prices and on ebay they are out the door in most cases price wise. I know this post was about Backmann diesels, but I’m sure what is happening to the steam line is probably pretty much the same for diesels line, you are going to see the prices go up and up and somewhere the buying public is going to say, enough is enough and that’s if these manufactures make the decision to produce them, it will be a business decision for many manufactures.

Really??

I think them bringing back the Dash 9 is probably the smartest move they could make as a large scale manufacturer.

It is the most sought after large scale diesel on EBay and every other selling group of large scale trains.

They have one shot to produce something that will sell and I think they picked the right horse to run with.

The used market is loaded with Shays, Climaxes and other steamers that Bachmann has produced in the past, so why do another run that maybe a hand full of people will want to buy?

USAT has hardly no diesel locomotives available and PIKO has no intentions of producing anything larger then the little switcher locomotive they came out with a few years ago.

LGB still keeps doing re-runs of the one and only diesel they have ever made.

I think the Dash-9 will be a big seller for them based on the interest shown on the used market, I know I will be ordering one just to have it in my collection as I never purchased one when they originally came out.

If this fails it may very well be the last large scale locomotive Bachmann will produce (besides the Thomas the Train product)

I agree Vincent. If Bachmann is to have any success in Large Scale they need to appeal to the largest audience out there.

I’m no longer a 1:29 user, but the fact is, that in our ever shrinking Large Scale market, 1:29 dominates. 1:20.3 is a small nice in a nice market. Even if affordable K’s or C-19’s were to make an appearance I would need to think twice about buying. I already have more motive power than I can ever use - some is Bachmann 1:20.3 stuff still is sealed shipping cartons. I have a nearly new 3 truck Shay that has not left the shelf since the day I bought it. Why would I buy more? I thought I might like a K, but a recent FB for sale post of a lightly used K for $1500 firm has put them way beyond what I can justify spending. That, for a locomotive that has a very questionable drive train from the factory. The only reason I am even looking for another C-19 is that it is the only locomotive I have ever owned that will freewheel without power and that will run down-grade on my steep hill without surging. It has an awesome motor/gear train. If I found one I’d be selling lots of surplus locos!

For your information, Star Hobby in Annapolis, MD has Bachman C 19 in stock, according to a buddy who was there a few weeks ago, and their web site

Here’s another possibility…

Kader has had this Dash 9’s built for years and they are sitting in storage. Remember the big deal about the track? and some other product that the Polks Gen. X? or something was trying to move because Kader was holding other stuff hostage until they got paid?

First they cleared out the track/eggliners to “test” the market. Then start dumping NOS…

Long shot in the dark, but possible. That BNSF “swoosh” scheme has been around on the prototype for a few years… And all the other paint schemes are pretty standard.

It will be interesting to see what labels/colors the boxes are.

For years the number of Large scale hobbyists has been declining. Then along comes Covid-19 and a surge in popularity subsequently driving prices up in recent months. Where is Kader? Co-incidence? (https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Not gonna argue but there are still masters out there to mold Amtrak …Just saying …scale matters not anymore as I have been saying it for years !

Really debating a “toaster” AEM-7 just because I want it.

I don’t do Facebook, so I will wait to see what happens. If they do make the dash 9’s I hope they have enough sense to make extra motor blocks. Quite sure there would be a good market for them.

Paul,

In a nutshell. Bachmann is going to release a 1:29 scale Dash-9 using Aristo-Craft tooling, 2 motors per truck, LED lighting and no proprietary decoder in 5 roadnames - NS 9256(operation lifesaver), CSX 9030(new logo), BNSF 4490(speed lettering), UP 9599(flag) and SF 635(warbonnet). They didn’t say when or how much but did mention next Wednesday they are hoping to post more info on their website.
