Yup… really big difference… 315 is a C18, and she has a TE of 18,000 lbs, and we had to pull along one of those K36’s, they have 36,000 lbs of TE. in theory a K36 can pull twice the tonnage then we can.

So as a practical point, and to make sure we can keep her running, we ( 315 Steam Program ) have set 80% of rated tonnage limits on what we haul. No sence breaking her just because. But when we double headed with 484 we gave it all we had, we had to pull our share, cause 484 could not get the 10 car train up the 4% grade by herself. she’s rated for 7.5 cars, and we are rated for 3.5.

Some more pics of 315. Olaf R. Has been photographing the D&RGW Narrow gage since the early 60’s. We are also proud to call him a Crew member on 315. He was helping to restore her from the very earliest days of the project.

Should be quite an Adventure… All involved believe that it will fit through the two Tunnels… It was always a tight fit… but made thru… The recent track work has raised some fit questions…

We will find out.

So there is a go very slow order for the tunnels then?

One of the very real concerns is that OY would get stuck in the tunnel, with a steam loco inside the tunnel. Could be really bad on the crew stuck inside with a belching engine. On normal runs, we back off on firing for the 1/4 mile before a tunnel to let the fire lay down, to keep the smoke to a minimum.

Has been talk of actually having the diesel near by as contingent.

Let the adventure begin…

I take it no clearance car is available?

Nope… They have taken measurements and it is close but they think it will fit.

I rode the pilot house most of the was across the RR. Wow what a adventure.

OK Gang… I’ve started to work on the conversion of 315 into 425 for the 2020 operating season on the C&TS. We will backdate 315 to her appearance in 1917 when she was first bought by the D&RG from the defunk Florence & Cripple Creek RR ( The Gold Belt Line ). When she entered service for the D&RG Her and her 4 sisters from the F&CC was originally assigned numbers 425 thru 429. When the merger came in 1923 with the Rio Grand Western. and the line became the Denver & Rio Grande Western, Most all locos were renumbered and class designations were changed, 2-8-0 425 Class 72, became 315 C-18. Same Loco, just re-numbered.

One of the projects to backdate her to 425 was to build a new headlight, in the older style, which was actually an oil burner light, that the D&RG converted to elect. While I was playing RR with Mik 2020, our CMO Tom Artzberger was, from scratch, building the new light.

Not to shabby if I do say so my self. My part in this project is to make the side number boards. So I start with some 3/16 Acrilic panels cut down to fit into the number board holders.

Next up I cut vinyl numbers in reverse from some scrap pieces. The numbers are 4" tall by 8+" wide, in Railroad Roman font.

Removed the protective plastic, and gave it a good scrubbing with an alcohol wipe down to remove any oils from the manunafactoring, and clean the surface to get a really good bond by the vinyl numbers that will be used as a masking.

Using “transfer tape” I aligned and applied the numbers. Paying special attention to burnish down all the edges.

Up next, sprayed 3 coats of Krylon gloss black paint over the entire number board.

Waiting for the paint to dry… Up next, I’ll remove the stuck on vinyl numbers… then coat the entire back in white paint. That should have white numbers showing thru the black background.

Stay Tuned… I also have to tackle some re-work on the Cow Catcher I made for her…

Got some more work done on the number boards…

First I pealed off the painted over numbers, leaving the clear Acrylic.

This now give me the black background. Next I painted the entire back, with a coat of white.

That will give me the white letters on the black background.

Flipped over and Taaaa Dahhhhh!!! All the paint is on the inside to protect it from the soot, cinders and elements…

I’m happy with the results… two more to do…
