D&RG 315, My week in Silverton

Jason, 315 is painted… Basic Semi-Gloss Black… Inside the cab is a “Drab Green” darker then midtone, We paint the smoke box and the stack a graphite empowered silver ( very high temp ) and about $300 per gallon. And all the accents are painted in a aluminum silver. The only white, are the lettering on the sides.

This was the standard D&RGW loco colors…

Some engines came from Baldwin with a green painted boiler shell… But only a couple…

Hopes this helps.

Dave, Definitely helps. Exactly what I was looking for. Thank You very much!!!

Jason

Dave I have another question a builder is trying to make it exactly as #315 is now. Can you tell me what the boiler is inside the cab? Is it black wraped and the rear that silver also? Or?

Thanks Jason

Jason… Sorry for the late reply, Been down to Big Bend National park for the past 10 days… No WiFi, No Cell…

The boiler that is in the cab is painted the same semi Gloss Black as the rest of the boiler, it does have insulation under the metal wrapping shell, with cutouts for attachment points directly to the boiler shell, i.e. drain plugs, throttle mount, lubricator mount, brake controller and etc.

The back head portion that fits out the back of the cab is black without the insulation.

On page 6 of this posting is a number of photos of inside the cab that show the paint color of the cab, boiler, and the back head of the boiler.

Hope this helps.

Can’t be “white” as that was not an accepted color of the the time. Must be ecru or something off the Downing/Rookwood pallet.

Thanks again Dave!!!

“Palette” not pallet. Although most paint store’s do store their cans of paint on pallets! (https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Well Guys: I spent the week in Chama performing our FRA required Annual inspection. Nothing to really report as far as anything serious machenicaly. We did replace 2 brake shoes on the tender, and one on the blind driver on the engine. Pretty routine. We had to do almost all the work outside in the weather. It was COLD. on two of the nights my waterhose to my RV froze up. We got rained on Snowed on earlier in the week and rain was a daily event.

The C&TS shop guys were really thrashing on the three locos inside, to get them ready for opening day.

315 will pull a opening day doubleheader with 484/9 from Chama up the hill to Cumbres pass. We will then cut lose 484/9 and run the long train on into Antonito.

315 was the first locomotive in steam this year on the C&TS.

Playing with the real thing is a kick in the A&&

FYI: guys, There is at least 15 minutes between when we went outbound at the whistle blows, and when we came back across the road. the editing makes it look like we ran by and instantly came back again.

Another posted short Vid of our test run out of Chama. This was from the Air…

Jason

Wow, that is an incredible video! The combination of stunningly beautiful images (I’d love to have my own videos look so good!) and the speaker’s passion for history and for the railroad, is overwhelming.

Duplicate post. Not sure how this happens.

Jon,

Check out the C&TRR website. There is a forum there for the folks that follow the trains everyday. I am sure videos have already been posted.

Ok guys, this is the first of our yesterday run, for the opening day stuff. 315 gets hooked up about 4:00 into, and then she stars…
