D&RG 315, My week in Silverton

So all that effort was “dry fit” ??? You are a perfectionist!!! Are you going to trim the ends of the bottom plate to match the vertical boards or leave it as is. To my eye that little corner hanging out there on the ends is a little odd, but if it’s prototype then all right!

A revisit of the obsolete drawing shows the ends, but rounded with a metal wrapper on the 2x6, which appears to have been eliminated. Also appears to have had a solid metal foot plate with support plates from the L & P coupler box:

Dave mentioned the copy won’t have as much metal. It will be interesting to see their resolution.

Got some additional work on the new pilot done. One of the revisions to add strength and a better attachment point to the existing front end, was to add an additional blocking to the front bottom board, to reach back and touch the existing front end.

Glued and screwed using pocket hole screws.

This really strengthened the front board. Back in the jig to start re-assembly.

That piece keeps reminding me of a B2 Stealth Bomber.

And got most of the pieces back in the right places with glue up, and additional screws.

A few more to place today and all back together.

Stay tuned.

Looks very good.
Staying "tuned".

Yah Hoooo! Got her all put back together, and no extra pieces left over.

All glued up and dowelled.

Have a couple of touch ups and such, but ready for a coat of primer and two coats of engine black.

We will be adding some steel for mounting.

Stay tuned.

So cool. Can’t wait for the paint!

Dave, so good to hear from you again! Fantastic work on that pilot.

Does it still fit on the locomotive?

Hey the left and right are swapped! Isn’t the right defined from sitting in the cab! Oh the humanity! (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

Greg

Right you are!..or is it left? (https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-undecided.gif)

Dear Mr. Elmassian,

I do believe that I have discovered the reason behind the error in your thinking.

You are using the setting on your Narrow Gage Secret Decoder Ring in the 315 setting, instead of the proper 425 setting.

Using the 425 setting, you will discover that the “L” becomes a “E” and the “R” becomes a “F”.

Next time be a little more attentive to the correct settings before decoding and translating.

Dave

Fantastic mock up Dave as it has the look you are after! …Honestly though I would be “Real” curious how they built it “Back in the Day”?

Nice work!!

Getting close to done… Down to the boring part…

Got the primmer on…

Today… First coat of engine black…

I always wondered how many cows those things actually caught…(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

@Ken Let me tell ya… Having run 315 on both the D&S and the C&T, There is a lot of open range land and private land that the right of way goes thru. I do know that Cows ( Generaliation for Bovine of all sorts ) are some of the dumbest creatures on the earth.

That being said: Cows tend to hang around RR tracks, and then act surprised when you sneak up on them. Now a Steam Locomotive generally can’t sneak up on anything, and out in the fairly open country you can hear her 'a coming, far enough way. So cow’s laying in the middle of the track ass end to the oncoming train. She hears us coming, and just looks at us like “Soooo” we lay on the whistle, and she slowly gets up to her feet. We hit the whistle again and she takes off running… right down the middle of the tracks, The engineer backs off the throttle a bit, hits the whistle yet again, and she is running full out, right down the middle of the tracks… were catching up quickly even though we are now doing about <10 mph, watching a large cow running for her life full out is kinda funny, from the view that we seeing, About 50 feet away from her, she finally gets out of the track, and cuts to the side. Stops about 20 feet from the tracks, turns around looks at us, and starts to create the worlds largest cow patty. The crew is ROTF LOAO!

And Finally!!! Got the first of several coats of engine black paint on it.

While waiting on the paint to cure between layers, I’ll start on some of the steel works to be added.

Stay tuned.

Lookin’ good!

Gee, it looks like the real thing. (https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Yup.  It does.
