CVSRy Plow Extra cleas up after Blizzard Adrieane

The heavy snow and wind that hit all along the East Coast last weekend dumped and drifted quite a bit of snow over the Candlewood Valley Scenic Railway. Railroad officials decided to wait for the sub-freezing temperatures to moderate before making an attempt at clearing the line. Observation by air revealed portions with little to no cover and others with cover deeper than CVSRy equipment could handle. Management decided that it was reasonable to attempt opening the line to Pine Summit today. Depending on how long the current thaw lasts, it may be possible to open more of the line at a later date. Here is an aerial view of Deep Cut and the entrance to the tunnel. NW SD-45 #1764 was called to shove the railroad’s vintage ATSF wedge plow followed by WM RS-3 #186. An equipment car and a caboose rounded out the Plow Extra. How long did it take them to clear the walkways on their SD45?

N&W SD45s running long hood forward bring back a lot of memories of train watching in Virginia.

Great pictures Jon. Next few days should be mild still hopefully the crew can get the main line open before the next round of snow.

Neat Jon…

niiiiicccccceeeeeee.

Great story line!! Cool pics!

Nicely done. I heard we might have some of our own Sunday night but I don’t have a plow!

With temps in the high 40’s, crews were called in at double time and-a-half to try and clear the rest of the line. The engineer of the Plow Extra quickly proved that he wasn’t worth that rate by dumping the wedge plow yet again…

FF: Click to Enlarge - IE: Right Click Photo and select Open Link in New Window to Enlarge While the steam boys were playing, the Plow Extra crew, with the help of some serious heavy equipment, managed to dig out Deep Cut and cleared the snow allowing entry into the tunnel. Just as they prepared to begin clearing the East Leg serious power problems developed stranding the train in the cut. Mechanics were called and after a bit of re-wiring, the train was able to be limped back to the yard. The crew hopes to be able to get some more OT tomorrow and finish clearing the entire line.

Good report on the work effort of the crews Jon.

Jon you need the KMRR crew to head up that way and give you a hand?

I agree on the Porter engineer…does kinda look like Sean…

Well, you gotta admit that running a Porter in 50' snowdrifts requires cojones. (I figured someone would pick up on that. Bad Zoot! Naughty Zoot!)

Since we didn’t get all that much snow, the RGS just waited till Mother Nature cleared the line…she did a much better job and saved the RGS a ton of money…

The snow has all (Almost) melted here too, Ken…but it seems the storm gods or skiers are demanding a few inches of snow over the next week…
No-mater…we long ago gave up on any interest in freezing one’s nuts, while trying to see anything in any scale fight non scale snow, out in a real world…better to sit inside and watch the rest of the fools freeze their nether parts…!!!

LOL its fun freezing our nether parts. Nothing like breathing in that freezing cold air, playing with trains with numb fingers, blowing snow in your face, all so we can get a few cool pictures of trains running in the snow. Besides you need us crazy snow people to keep you entertained during the winter months. :) Besides Im young and dumb still LOL

That’s right…I enjoy the entertainment.
So you all keep freezing your butts off and I’ll try to venture out and run a train or two myself
Ralph

The Plow Extra was called again today. Late yesterday Mother Nature drooped about 9 inches of nice fluffy snow. This looks SO much better than all the debris from the blizzard last week. The survey crew went out in the helicopter and took these shots of the railroad early this morning. West Escape`
