CVSRy Over-Engineering Dept. proposes to cover Deep Cut

Looking good. It was a great weekend. I got stuck working the last 5 days and it seems all the crazy poeple came out. Although I didnt see Rooster out.

THink he has been trying to concentrate on that powered boxcar lately. Think Dad has been making him tow the line.

Had a wicked cold this weekend, couldn’t even enjoy/taste Easter dinner and the family treated me as I had the plague. All is better now. Piss on that powered boxcar as I had to seclude myself from the family this weekend and had nothing better to do.

The beautiful weather continues and so does work on the tunnel’s inspection hatch. The problem of front edge of the block not being flush with the foundation was addressed in hopes of creating flat mating face for the pipe. I’m getting pretty good at form design and finished up what I thought would work on Monday. Tuesday I decided that I did not want to risk the ‘face pour’ separating from the block, so I used my Ramset tool to attach some tie plates and wire reinforcement. By dark I had all the re-bar and forms in place and was ready to pour. Wednesday I dragged out the electric mixer and mixed up 80 pounds of Quickcrete. Because I was only adding a 1.5" face, I needed to spoon the concrete into the form, use a tamping stick and bang a rubber mallet on the form to try and fill all the voids. By dark I was satisfied that I had done the best I could. This evening it was time to remove the forms and see if I did good…

FF: Click to Enlarge - IE: Right Click Photo and select Open Link in New Window to Enlarge So this evening I did yet another fix - filling the voids and putting the forms back on to support the patches. Tomorrow I’ll find out if I can really move on to pipe.

Ray moves rocks…you move bags of concrete!

This type of problem has been addressed many times down through the ages and so man created the development of Quickcrete to repair those spots.

That's my problem !!!! I've been using Quickcreet for the initial pour - not just for the repairs :D

Then its all repairable. ;-)

And there is a financial price to be paid for that. I realized last summer that the 80 pound bags are just too much for me to handle,, so now I buy the 40 ponders. They are only 75 cents less than an 80 pound bag, so I'm paying nearly double for the convenience of being able to actually carry a bag from the car to the mixer.

Have you considered silly putty???

shhhh, devil, shhhhh, I typed it already, okay???

No - but wacky tabacky might help

 Jon…

Jon, do have one of those orbital sanders? Holding one of them against the side of the form will eliminate those air pockets. If not just try using a stick and move it up and down inside the form to get the cement to fill the spaces.

Thanks Ken. I knew that trick, but decided to use a rubber mallet instead of the sander. I also used a stick. I obviously missed that large spot on the left with the stick. I think my concrete was just a bit too stuff to get through the small space around all my re-bar.

I have a buddy that does concrete countertops and I don’t want too tell you what he sometimes uses as a vibrating device to remove air pockets.

This is degrading rapidly. Good thing it’s page 10!. Trying to resolve these images of giant pink bunnies and vibrating devices. I’m not sure I like where that is leading me :o

No work tonight. Cool and Damp the crew decided watching Monsters Inc. with the 6yo niece was a better idea.

[Edit for page 10, whatever that means]

That's what you garden trailer is for! Sheesh!

Garden trailer works great, but the tractor needs a battery. I'm using the car as a backup. Work-site is only 15 feet from the street. What I'm really talking about is trying to hold an 80 pound bag and pour it slowly into the mixer. Used to be no problem a few years ago, but gives me lots of trouble now. I can handle the 40.

Couldn’t you use a 5 gallon bucket and dump half in that at an easier location. I seem to remember “Hod Carriers” splitting a bag in half and the 2 halfs sitting on the ground with the open ends up. That would be your 40 lbs, a piece.

Good weather this weekend and good progress - The repairs to the face pour came out good. I’m actually happy now that I made the mistake requiring this pour because I ended up with a nice smooth mating face for the pipe. The face pour was completed and the job-site readied for pipe Saturday morning…
