After looking at all of them I'm still trying to figure out what the two things on the side are dog ears?
Sean - It’s based on the East Broad Top herald…

I may be wrong, but I think the shape is supposed to represent a piece of cloth draped over a cylinder, perhaps segment of a pole.
Portiers basically are swags

Haven’t shrunk it yet for your avatar

Shrunk, yes. I finally have a version that scales well and will cut properly. It also fixes a few issues with the last attempt. The herald outline was completely re-drawn, again. Avatar, not yet. So here is the prototype…

Compared to the final version in a similar color…

Now the question is, at 2.25 inches tall x 1.75 inches wide, is this too large for 1:20.3? I can shrink it more, but at this size I’m pushing the limits of vinyl. We also have a transfer printer that does white but I’m not sure we have a suitable decal-like material to print on. If I had to shell out for a roll of material it would cost less for me to get them from Stan.
unless my math is off that will be a small herald in 1:20.3

bout the same here Jon, but when I picture some of the heralds they seem to take up a good portion of a boxcar side.
You’re right in the ballpark, Jon.
My first heralds at 3 inches were a bit too big. I just ordered some from Stan at 2 1/2 inches.

More fun while waiting for the turkey to cook… Pete Thornton emailed me asking for a copy of the scalable (vector graphic) herald outline, so he could do some EBT stencils. That was easy, just remove the CVSRy text and send it off. But without the text he still would have a problem scaling the text. I don’t have the exact font the EBT used, but I found one that is close. From the EBT company website…

Not perfect, but close enough I think
close only counts in horseshoes & handgernades…

Unless I failed math terribly bad…
2.25 x 20.3 = 45.675 or 3’-9 5/8" and
1.75 x 20.3 = 35.525 or 2’-11 9/16"
sounds like a nice size to me. Large enough to be seen clearly and small enough to not be overbearing.
From my ‘For what it’s worth department’.

After our art director taught me a couple of more tricks to make my design “cutable”, he ran one each of the 2.25" x 1.75" and the smaller 2" x 1.5" version then turned me loose to try and weed the scrap vinyl out. I was able to do the larger one with out any vision aid other than my regular glasses, but the small one required the use of my 10X OptiVisor and a hypodermic needle as a pick. There were a few issues of lifting the “good” vinyl off the backing, but with a few adjustments I was able to get them both weeded. Very time consuming, but it works.
Tomorrow I’ll mount my two test subjects on some black PVC and take a picture.
Sounds like nice progress, Jon. Looking forward to seeing how they turned out.

Yup, it sure is…

I’m a real novice at this and I made a few mistakes weeding out the scrap. Many will notice these problems, the worst being the W in Railway on the right one. This was a feasibility test and training mission, so with that in mind I think this was 100% successful. The left herald is just over 50mm tall, or about 40 inches in F. The right one is almost 60mm, or about 48 inches in F. I’m going to use the larger version in production because it’s much easier to weed. I’ve already created a master cut sheet with numbers and data for a few box cars and a few locos. Now I’m just waiting for some down time on the cutter. This has been a lot of work but still fun and very educational.
