CVRR Utility #17

You had it right, but I had to delete “=youtu.be” from the end of the url.

Son, nice run…

That is soooo neat! Love the action. I want one! Great work and thanks for the video (about time too).

Simply amazing, isn't it :D Ralph

Rooster tell your son he did a great job building that engine. Looks great and its about time we see it running outdoors.

What a Rube Goldberg looking contraption that things is…

I still can’t believe I made it work. When I first saw the prototype, I thought it was cool and I wanted to attempt to build it even though I was told to pick something easier to model. My response was “that thing is pretty simple and straight forward”. BOY did I learn a lot from this build!! Some of the crew here was a big help in educating me on steam locomotives and for that I thank you (you know who you are).
My goal is to finish it this summer and get some GOOD video of it pulling the combination car over my bridges (as that was it’s prototypical purpose). It will then reside on loan at our local museum with the combination car for their CVRR room.

Very nice! Love that motion.

Ok I’m not a steam guy but as noted in the past I’m totally into local history. I have several books on the real Cumberland Valley RR which the main still runs behind my house now owned by N.S. (as noted in the past). I spotted this unit in one of my books several years ago and found it quite interesting, flat out ugly and down right badass… It kinda looks like the Munster Mobile on rail’s …did I say it was ugly and has a bellcrank, … it would have pulled the CVRR combination car over the Susquehanna River too Harrisburg,PA in it’s “heyday”. There is ZERO info on this unit other than it had 42" drivers and it’s weight. It was built by Seth Wilmarth (famous for the Pioneer #13 at the B&O Museum currently) …with that said I want this unit in G scale! This is a scanned picture from a book I own

A recent link was posted on the CVRR combination car thread that shows more about the CVRR I like pictures

Very cool…but where’s the Combination car

Take note of the 1:1 pic of Washington St station stop above the models …You guys are the best!

 You should have your Washington St station in the case too

That’s very cool. Is the exhibit permanent ?

David,

I just ran across this thread for the first time tonight. Absolutely enthralling, a great build and wonderful videos. A lot of fine craftsmanship there and some very innovative problem solving. The prototype though looks like the sort of thing that got me flunked out of engineering school by a professor who designed jet engines for the Luftwaffe.

Some questions if I might:

  • Your pictures show the rigid wheelbase out to be nearly 9.75 inches. What was the minimum radius it could run on? What were the curves in your videos?

  • What scale ratio did you build this engine and that beautiful combine to?

  • Why did you select Percy to build from (wheel size, gear train, had one lying around, other)?

  • Does Phoenix have a sound generator for this?

  • When will you start marketing the kit for it?

  • What will your next foray into public masochism be?

Thanks for sharing this most interesting and instructive thread on fine modeling.

They sure do look purty together in that case. Nice !

It is permanent display mainly based on the CVRR and the models are on loan
