Update: didn’t realize how long its been since I have worked on this project, been busy working on the build challenge and got sidetracked. been working on the cylinders and crank disks. I cut some delton c-16 siderods to start
(http://i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s414/trainbuffjr1/skidder-buildchallenge001_zps48f43f4f.jpg)
I then made some crank disks out of washers and .010 styrene. here is the end result.
there will be a cover in front of the crank disks that will have the Willamette logo on them, so not worrying much about the details on them. Today I got some material to start on the monstrous tower, hope to get some pictures of the progress soon. To be continued…
Got the skidder up on the moving trucks last night to prepare for the tower build, so the crew decided to pose with the beast

Update: tower officially started. I decided I needed a stronger base to start with other than styrene, so I decided to use a piece of scrap cedar. Here you see the pieces with some styrene on top. It is just above this that the tower will angle in over the frame. Here the blocks are spaced 7 1/2" apart like it will be over the frame.
and here they are in place. They stand around 11" tall at this point, which will account for about 1/5 of the total height.

to be continued…
AAron, I do believe your workers are slacking again…
looking good, man…
Nice work Aaron!
…:)…
I am now willing to admit that i’m crazy and need help lol! This morning I started plating the front tower. Under this arch is where the loader will be. the top of the arch is over 6" above the deck, Off of the frame it is large enough to run my shay through with a couple inches above to spare

I think I need some serious help now
Aaron,
When you get the overall dimensions established, I think you need to build a carrier. I’d hate to see damage before completion.

Time to wake up the crew! With the snow coming down I decided it was time to get a little more work done on this thing. First here are some pictures of a test run taken from our clubs winter meet in February

Today I started work on the frame for the roof that will run over the top of the winches
(http://i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s414/trainbuffjr1/springfield-skidder-caboose014_zpsd7d55219.jpg)
and here it is with the lower tower in place. I also started on the operating platform for the winches. In this shot we actually see someone working (how did that happen?)

Looking good Aaron. Does your club have a building with an indoor layout? How about some more pictures of it?
Chuck
Chuck, no permanent building, we set up at the local train shows. I will see if I have some more pictures. We do have a website full of pictures of the modules set up at the shows, along with other info on the Gateway Garden Railroad Club here: http://www.ggrrc.org/
Aaron,
I was wondering what happened with this project. Nice to see you making progress with it again.
anxious to see the finished product.
Have you seen the picture of them turning the tower skidder around by throwing the switch after the first truck passed through it? I think it is in one of the Kinsey Photo books.
Rick
Are you going to add HEP cabling ?
Rick, me to. I have heard of them turning skidders that way, but I don’t know if I have seen a picture of them doing it. Could make for a mess if it got away from them.
David, you bet
Good to see the build back
