Corrugated Aluminum roofing

Ozark’s Miniatures used to sell bundles of nice corrugated roofing.
I need quite a bit for my mine project.
Does anyone know where I can get some?

As a last resort, I will try to make some. But flattening beer cans is out.
Maybe flashing?
I don’t know, but I have to do something.

Thanks,
jb

It seems like flashing would be too thick for the crimper unless someone has found a heavier crimper.

My fall project is building a mine mill and, like you, I’ll be making a lot of siding for the building.

I stick with painting it on the outside of the cans because it holds better.

Ray, our premier model building might know where to get the slightly heavier metal.

It used to be produced by a guy in San Diego which is where he lives.
I like that slightly heavier metal and if you can track down the source that would be great.

Yeah, Doug.
I liked Ozark’s roofing as well.
It was a little better than using disposable baking pans and such.
I might ask Ozark to see where they got it.

You might want to give Dave a call. He should be back from Tacoma. I know he uses corrugated metal, I just finished a mine building of his.

I have an industrial crimper that I use. If you want you can send me your sheets to crimp and I’ll do it for $10 assuming a half hour is enough to run it through the crimper. Alternatively I can provide the aluminum to crimp and we’d just have to agree on the cost per sheet.

Michael’s has a crimper that will crimp beer cans. Then you can rent it out to the club.

Just how lazy are you John? Do you have more money than time? If so, send some $$ my way… :stuck_out_tongue:

That is a real crimper. Very nice.

I had a Michael’s crimper. That’s why I had this one made by the local machine shop. The crimper from Micahel’s will work I know but I found that it took several passes to get a decent crimp and I used it to make the panels for this engine shed…never again.

I wish the Michael’s crimper would do heavier metal than my soda cans but the price was right.

Some information for those interested.

Beer/Soda cans are made from an alloy of aluminum that anneals (looses it’s temper/hardening) at 650 degrees. There is no holding time required, just reach that temp. Once annealed the can stock will go through the Fiskars Crimper nicely with out the additional hand cramping of multiple passes. It will also cut with simple scissors and they will last quite a while.

A standard electric wall oven will reach about 900 degrees in self cleaning mode. I am currently looking for a pyrometer or thermo couple, temperature switch, relay and contactor (required to kill the line voltage and shut off the oven) for the express purpose of ‘killing cans’ for corrugated siding. When I get the details worked out I will post them.

John, Try here…

Last price I paid … $8.50 for 20 pieces. I don’t know why the link won’t post. Anyway “soddersenterprises.com

. . here is why, Richard… . .

Unfortunately, I own nothing that will reach 600 degrees. My wall oven isn’t self cleaning and is 40 years old.
I don’t think the Weber gas BBQ will do it.
Like I said, Ozarks was perfect.

I’m so sorry to hear this. It has been several years since I last purchased any aluminum siding from Sodder’s so I knew nothing of this. Thanks Steve for the information.

Actually John, the gas BBQ might. The issue is with the temp control. The thin material in the aluminum cans can over heat very easily (become a puddle in the bottom of the BBQ), that is why I am looking for the controls to kill the power to the oven at 650. The other option might be a bit of ‘dumpster diving’ at the local recycler/landfill. I used to get sheet metal for other projects that way.

Good Luck and I will keep ya posted.

Larry,
If you’ll do the crimping and supply the aluminum, I’d be more than happy to buy some.
So would other modelers, I’d bet.
I’ll do some measuring and contact you via Email.

Just watch the “Evil Bay” I bought the “Fiskar” for around $7.00 I think with the shipping $10. I have been crimping pop cans for a few weeks. Finished up my building by putting the fiskared roof on I put together a year and a half ago!! Regal

Did you just use the Rustoleum metal spray on the roof. I am also looking for a way to make it “distressed.”

Nothing done just Fiskared the pop cans cut em and glued em on! Regal

OK John, I’ll wait. Send your address and I’ll get a sample in the mail pronto
