I found that if you run a propane torch over the flattened alumun sheets before you run them through the crimper they produce a nice deep crimp with one pass. Just be careful with the torch as you can easily melt the aluminum. I think this works much faster and easier than putting the sheets on a grill. This also burns off any residual sticky syrup on the can surface so it will take paint better.
