Large Scale Central

Computer related topic

Since upgrading to I.E. 8 (that is Internet Explorer 8 for those not conversant in lingo techno jargon speak), several times when I have this site (LSC, that is Large Scale Central site for those who do not abbreviate site names) running, I get an error response from Microsoft, telling me a shutdown has occurred on the site and it wants me to send an error message to Microsoft. Apparently, the header tab for the site, located just above the site viewing screen, temporarily shutsdown and recovers. Now I do not notice the shutdown or any problem viewing the site, but Microsoft keeps telling me of a temporary shutdown. It must be milliseconds in duration as I do not observe it.

I knew that I should have stayed with I.E. 7 (that is Internet Explorer 7 for those not conversant with techno jargon).

Edit: as soon as I re entered this site, I got the same shutdown message. I follwed the ‘Send error report’ link and downloaded a Microsoft Safety Scanner programme. Carried out the scan and of cause no viruses or spyware reported. Microsoft states that the issue is normally caused by Internet Explorer ‘add-ons’. As I only downloaded the I.E. software yesterday and have only used the internet for a few minutes since, then the add-ons must be in the Microsoft software itself. It is only this site ‘having’ the shutdown difficulty. I do not notice the shutdown, however I.E. thinks that the LSC tab has shutdown and then magically recovers itself. Nothing is observable on the screen. You just have to love microsoft!!!

Further, for those still following. Opening the main forum page (home page) is not a problem. however, when opening the forum listing page from the home page, the ‘Send error report’ box appears and when I press ‘Do not send’ the internet shutsdown and I.E. attempts to recover the LSC link.

Alas, I.E. has given up and I received a page stating that there is a problem on the site and I.E. will not attempt to access the site. This is the page received (hopefully, will show). Edit: link requires copy and paste into browser as it will not autodirect.

Hey Tim, time to switch to another browser. I use OPERA for everything but the cooky sites that appear to be designed for I.E. only. And there are not that many. I like OPERA because it shows me all kinds of stuff when I right click that none of the others do.

While I am generally a Windoze fan, I avoid IE in any of its versions. I use Firefox (http://www.firefox.com) or Google Chrome (http://www.google.com). One of the beauties of the PC platform is all of the free software that is out there. One of my favorites is the Open Office suite for word processing, spread sheets and more, however, if you happen to have IE9, it disables the open office software. Too bad Microsoft can’t play well with the other people on the internet! And, I’ve never gotten any of the error messages you refer to using the above mentioned browsers.

I agree,

Although I can’t be considered computer savvy I think that IE 7 is out dated and IE 8 is just too much of a PITA to use.

I updated to IE 8 a while back and had nothing but grief; slooooow loading, strange messages, didn’t work well with common programs like Jave, etc. This is/was all on Vista.

Finally changed to Google Chrome and never looked back. All problems disappeared.

Give it some consideration.

Rick

Well, downloaded Google Chrome (new learning experience). Site seems stable on Chrome. The issue arises with I.E. 8 when I log out. This takes me to the site home page. I then select forums and open the forum list page. Almost immediately the error report dialogue box appears. When I press “Don’t send” box, the internet shuts down and reinitiates, finishing with the site page stable. I never had this problem with I.E. 7. Logout always take s you to the home page.

Edit: the same problem occurs even if I do not logout. It seems selecting the home page and then the forum page initiates the problem (even when logged in). Selecting the forum page direct from a posting page is normal (no error report dialogue box).

Further to above, after logging out from a posting, the home page is automatically selected. If I then initiate the forum using a link from a Favourites tab, then same problem, error report box highlighted. Selecting “Don’t send” link shuts down the internet and then it recovers. I.E. will only allow two reconnect attempts and then will not try to link to the site. It seems for me, I.E. 8 is not suitable for this site.

Tim,

I use all of the major internet browsers, I.E. 8, Firefox (my personal default), Opera, Google Chrome, Safari (Apple for Windows platform) and SeaMonkey. The one I consistently experience issues with is I.E in any of it’s incarnations. What really frosts my cookies with I.E. is that it doesn’t even play well with some Microsoft add-ins. I use all of them to check web coding for the web sites I work on to make sure anyone can view them without compatibility issues.

Good luck Tim.

Bob,
it is definately an I.E. 8 issue as it has occurred on two other sites today that I have visited, eBay (sporadically) and once on an English forum. I am slowly coming to terms with Chrome, so will relegate I.E. 8 to those sites that I really may need to use it. I never had any issues with I.E. 7 (I only upgraded as PayPal cited security issues with I.E. 7 and You-tube stated that they were no longer supporting I.E. 7).

After bombing out with ME(?) in 2000, Vista and I.E. 8, maybe Bill needs to rejoin the company and get Microsoft back on course.

Tim,

I only stay with IE on those sites that will not play nice with others, or I would ignore it’s existence entirely. I am slowly moving toward Linux, but will never be able to completely ditch Windows and the engineering software I use is not available on the Linux platform.

Good luck with your transition to a superior browser (any other is superior in my opinion, but then I am terribly biased).

IE7 is becoming unsupported on more sites like Youtube and I need my LOL cats and the my Failblog so I upgraded …yeah right …to IE8 at work. Been a headache. I also have the Chrome which works but is alot less user accessible, at least compared to the older version of Google. But if got easier that ment it couldn’t be better right?

I dread updating the home com’fuser explorer.

:frowning:

. . .and on top of that lot, there is a rumour (repeat - rumour) going around, that the next OS will be an uprated version of XP as Vista /Win7 has bombed!!

Vic,
I have never had an issue with ‘XP’ or IE6/7, but as soon as I ‘updated’ to IE8 the internet shutdown issues surfaced. Inadvertently, I opened the browser using IE8 and opened this site. I know that logging off and being transferred to the homepage is going to cause me grief. The error report dialogue box will be highlighted and pressing ‘Dont Send’ will shutdown the internet and initiate an auto recovery.

I thought that progress and development made products better, not worse!

Ross,
I have never had an issue with XP Professional. My wife and family all use XP on their laptops with no issues. I will certainly resist any impulse to ‘upgrade’ to Windows 7.

I’m also a XP Pro die-hard. But eventually I know I will have to go to Windows 7. My understanding is that Win 7 Pro and Win 7 Ultimate has a built-in kernal where you can boot-up in XP Pro “mode”, if you so desire. Interesting to say the least!

Ain’t Linux great? I’m with Bob Cope, except that for me IE frosts my cake rather than my cookies. Most of my cookies are working just fine…

W7 Pro & Ultmate can run XP Pro in a "virtual machine". However, you have to download and install the virtual machine and the special copy of XP from Microsoft. It is a free download. Ralph

Now this is my final on this topic (thank goodness).

Fed up with IE8 crashing, I went to a restore point from two weeks ago and did a system restore. When I opened my internet browser and checked the status of IE, it stated that I was already running IE8 and have been for a very long time with no problems until two days ago when mistakenly, I updated my browser to IE8 which was already installed. Now I had believed that I was running IE8 but kept getting PayPal prompts that I was running an outdated browser and You-tube advised that they no longer were supporting IE7. This lead me to believe that I was actually running IE7. All confusing.

Anyhow, the computer is working just fine as it always has running IE8. Possibly, downloading IE8 and installing over an existing IE8 confused the computer as it did me. Funny how I thought that I had updated to IE8 a year or so ago and yet was getting prompts until a few days ago telling me to update my outdated browser.

See Tim, one more instance of “Don’t believe everything the computer tells you” :).

Whenever I boot up Windows I know I’m going to be working with either a very confused or a very retarded computer.

Oops that won’t be politically correct, will it?

An intelligence-challenged computer (NINCOMPOOP). :stuck_out_tongue:

I have had no issues with Windows 7 stability and performance for over a year and a half. I have found myself doing lots of cache and especially registry cleaning with Internet Explorer over the past 3 years if I have to use it for active x etc.

I use XP Pro with SP3. It has only ever crashed once, just before I added SP3.
One odd thing though. Starting about 6 weeks ago everyday there are always at least two updates to be installed when I shut the pooter down. Sometimes as many as ten or eleven updates.
I regularly defrag and use CCleaner to get rid of temp files etc.
I also only use IE8 for general Internet access and it works just fine for me.
My (young) webmaster makes me use Firefox for working on my website. Every time I go to use Firefox it seems like there is a new and improved version available which means I don’t get to do any work until it has downloaded and installed itself.
Never used any other browsers on my computer, so cannot comment about them.

Safari is installed on my (old) I Phone which I find a pain to use.
