I know that I have IE8 onboard and yet You-tube is still telling me that I am running IE7 and that it will no longer support IE7. Finally, PayPal has woken to the fact that I am running a current up to date browser and has stopped advising me of security issues with my ‘supposed’ current system.

Not withstanding the current fiasco, I am sticking with IE8, as up to the past few days I had never had an internet browser issue. The system restore yesterday removed the Google Chrome browser and it will not be reloaded. For a computer novice, I find IE8 is fine. I do not have enough experience to know when it is giving me grief, unless complete failure/shutdown occurs.

Tim, if I may, I recommend you check out the http://www.soundbytes.org website. Thats bytes with a Y, and (dot) ORG, not COM.

Its a radio-help show for computer users. Its hosted by three gents with 100 years of computer expertise between the three of them. One is a Mac guy, one a Linux guy and the third a Windows gent. Its a great learning tool if you have any interested in expanding your computer proficiency. They have their show archived on their site (soundbytes.org/archives) since mid-2001, which allows you to pick up plenty of good tips to use on the XP system.

As for the whole kernel debate, I personally prefer the XP kernel, however the XP-64bit version is almost completely unsupported. Because of that, and my desire to run my mobo (mother board) at its full 16 gigabytes of RAM, I needed 64-bit Operating System, which led me first to LinuxMint, and eventually to Win7-64. After getting some “behind the keyboard” time, I find 7 to be equal to XP as far as stability and utility. My only complaint (besides backward compatibility) is the lack of ability to convert from a Win7-basic “feel” to an XP-based interface. Too much of 7’s controls are locked behind “security” fences to protect the basic user.

And I’ve heard 8 is a follow-up to the Millenium Edition/Vista pattern… ME=sucked, XP=great - Vista=sucked, 7=great - 8~sucks?
But, I’ve also read that the Metro interface, if properly supported by the new WindowsStore, won’t be too terribly bad. I haven’t had a chance to download the 8 preview myself yet… but I’m looking forward to trying it out.

After lauding the XP Pro with SP3 above. Today I had a bug appear. XP opened up just fine. My Telstra dongle started but the Internet connection sucked and was as slow as a wet weekend. I attempted the usual restart fix but could not get XP to close down. So I just turned the pooter off, waited 30 seconds to restart which it did. This time the Dongle would not initiate and a message appeared asking me to reinsert the Dongle. I did so and now everything works just fine.
Methinks it was the Dongle that caused XP to spit the dummy and not shut down and restart properly the first time.

The more I hear about Windows, the more I love my Mac! I use Firefox, and it’s very solid and dependable. I used Safari for a while, and use it again if I have to re-boot my internet connection, as ATT doesn’t play nicely with Firefox.

Glad you enjoy your Mac.
The only people I hear of having problems with Windows, are using software a dozen years old.
The last Netbook I bought running Windows 7, cost me $189. It doesn’t use a special boot loader to prevent me from installing the operating system of my choice.
When Apple stops charging a 400% premium for hardware and restores my ability to make a choice, I’ll buy an Apple

While I am by no means a computer nerd, expert, pro, or whatever, I have owned 1,
or more, continously for over 30 years… Today I own 4, all of which have XP Pro an
IE 8 in them, 3 of which R online almost continously… I have almost zero problems
with either XP or IE 8… While I don’t really know much about computers, I have learned
what it takes, and how to deal with them over the last 30+ years… All wasn’t always a bed
roses however, I used to have the same kind of experiences U guys R relating here…
Thru a friend I was introduced to the head computer guru for the county Jr. college system
here, an its a large one, 3 campuses… He and his minions install, maintain, update, repair.
and whatever else is necessary to keep them all going… So anyway I took the oportunity
to pick his brain a little, this was a several years ago now, explained my troubles to him,
and he suggested that most of these AV programs on the market just weren’t really
all that compatible with the O/S and browsers and were the source of a lot of these
mysterious "issues’ that people had with their O/Ss & browsers… When asked what I
was using at the time, I said Norton, and he said that one was a real trouble maker, and
suggested that I try a little known one at the time, Grisoft AV, now known as AVG… Well
to make a long story short, I removed Nortons an installed the Grisoft and never looked
back, all the “issues” were gone, so I have had AVG AV, AVG firewall, and now AVG PC
tune-up in all my computers for some years now, an I have had NO viruses, NO hi-jacks,
just almost no problems at all with any of them… Suggested my son try it in his computer
too, also a friend who was having weird problems, both have had real good luck with AVG,
their problems largely disappeared after switching over… I’m not suggesting this is going
to solve all of everybodies problems here, but it sure has done wonders around here,
may be something for U to look into as well…
