Large Scale Central

Complex RR Junction... Who wants to model *this*?

Found this post on Reddit and figured I’d share it here. This junction in Newcastle-on-Tyne is incredible! It’d be insanely cool to see this in any model scale.

With that many diamonds, you would think it was in South Africa…!!

Nope, definitely British as the boys are sitting behind the building at the table in the back left drinking tea playing whist or probably texas hold em

As long as it comes with the A4 steam engine.

The track on the right goes on the High Level Bridge over the River Tyne to Gateshead.

It could be worse, add some narrow gauge, and a rack or two :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Okay, Sean. You’d better get started! I look forward to seeing your trackwork!

You have no idea how many beers I have quickly knocked down this evening looking at this sh&t.
It’s fascinating on so many aspects it’s not even funny. Design, Engineering, Skilled Labor, etc… Then who’s the lucky guy that gets to control the signals!

This is all your fault John!

And it’s all elevated!

interesting, that they did not use guardrails, but used tram-stile rails.

Yes, all my fault! I am sorry, Rooster. :stuck_out_tongue:
That ariel shot is awesome!

Korm, I did not even notice that. Huh.

Does anyone know if this still exists?

Sure does. Part of the East Coast Mainline. 125mph electrics zoom over it [slowly] every day.

This pic was 1988, from a Facebook thread. Someone commented it still looked the same, though it will have catenary and wires added.

I think I read somewhere all those diamonds were cast in steel. They probably cast the guardrails as continuous due to the number of them.

Wow, color photos make it look so much less chaotic. I am adding this to my lost of places to visit someday.

Thanks for the info, Peter

In the B&W photo, that looks like the Tyne bridge in the background, which would put the trackage about here (just below this, Google Maps is being dumb when pasting this link)

Looks like they’ve simplified it a bit.

Good idea. IF I’m looking at the right area, it looks like several tracks have been removed from the left (west) side and replaced with parking. Also a lot of the crossings have been eliminated. Still cool though, and complicated enough…

Not sure if this is it though?

I actually think its the other side of the station. If you look at this picture, there’s an arch bridge in the background, which I believe is the Tyne bridge

which would put the station behind the photographer.

And roughly this view

beeker

That is looking from Gateshead Station, across the bridge from Newcastle.

The crossings have been simplified. If you look at Wikipedia, here’s
“The eastern approach to the station in 1960, viewed from The Castle” (I love the little switcher on the RH side.)

And then “A similar view in 2005. The station was reduced in size after the Metro replaced suburban heavy rail services.” Note the electric wires and catenary.

Just to add to the fun, here’s some Google Earth historical photos, starting with 1945:

Big gap until 2001:

2018:

and 2025:

Looks like the northeast entrance is the main one being discussed:

And when you do, John, don’t forget the little yard to the southwest…
