Coil Car

I started this while I was waiting to paint the 2 bay hopper. Now I’m closing in on waiting to paint this one!

Brian

Cool

Nice looking car, brian…

…grinning…

Nice looking build

Do we have paint yet?

Jon.

Thanks guys,

Jon, no not yet…I’m waiting for the humidity to drop…all this snow really sucks (sigh)

Brian

 While you are waiting to paint… feel free to build me two or three of those if you would?

OK, Finally an update. I built the coil covers. That was a challenge, but I’m happy with the results. Here’s one of them just after I had applied the stack brackets.

Now, here’s a couple shots with the covers on the car. We’re getting there!

Enjoy! Brian

Nice!!
What are you using for the walkways? Don’t even tell me your making them out of individual styrene strips either!

Nice work on the covers Brian. Would you mind telling what you used for the corrogated roll ?

Nice looking car…

Rooster, I’m nuts but maybe not quite that nuts…or maybe worse? Here’s what I did. I bought several USA Trains walkways for the 50’ boxcars. I was going to use them as-is but of course it was going to look a bit hokey (at least to me) so I modified them. It took 5 pieces to make the whole walkway. As far as prototypical accuracy these are perfect now. USA Trains did an excellent job making their walkway. These pictures should show how I modified them, I removed the outside rib on each side to get the rib count correct.

Dave, The corrugated is a Plastruct product. And as is Plastructs way, the catalog and the display rack product numbers don’t match. Catalog #PS-19 but if you want the 2 sheet pack it’s #91513. The description is “G scale/1:24 Ribbed Roof/Corrugated” Here’s a picture of the underside to show how I am supporting it (the Plastruct sheets are flimsey/thin)

And here’s another update…Yesterday afternoon I got some paint on the covers.

Me too, on both counts :D

If I’d spend more time modeling and less time reading about it I might be able to attain a tenth or so of the skill that’s displayed here !

thanks for the product info Brian ( both the walkways and the covers ) I looked at those covers for a current build and held out for more research. Now I may give them a shot.

Agreed.... I see you have plans to work from as well Brian....you sneaky devil! ;)

Dave,
Your welcome.

Rooster,
I have plans because I drew them up. Nothing sneaky about it…I have to work to a plan it seems. I work out many problems while I draw up a project. Some wise words from a farmer I once knew…“plan your work, work your plan”. I envy your ability to create great models without a plan.

Brian

Here’s a shot from today. About 95% complete!
