I guess I should get this back on topic again. My tucks came in the mail yesterday. I might try and start building this project very soon. Just waiting on a boiler and then I can start the cab etc.....
Start on the chassis… get that running good, then make the rest to fit. http://www.gearedsteam.com/climax/climax.htm

If the boiler doesn’t pan out… There is a prototype for that too

Great pictures Mik. I will have to add them to my folder. Good idea on getting the trucks running first. Stupid me ordered the wrong trucks. I got the ones for the egg liners or so the site said. I have to send them back. I ended up ordering the center cab trucks. They were not easy to find. They should be here end of week.
Here is yet another a Climax A pic for you. Good luck!

Check out the wheels and track. Looks like 6’ gage.
does anybody have pics, that show how the climaxes get their power to the wheels?
Korm,
I have an set of the old Kemtron drawing of Fruit Growers Climax #3 I could share if you would like.
I just realized that they are of a Class B, but if memory is correct the Class A is similar.
Some links I have on Climax

driveshafts…
Here is a Class A scratchbuild in 45mm gauge. http://people.ohio.edu/urieli/stirling/andy_climax/climax.html

This photo seems to be the best pic I have seen showing the full transmission from two vertical cylinders thru gearing to the line shaft to the gears in the truck as shown above in Mik’s post. Bob C.
I might be wrong, but I think I read that the vertical boilered class A had one speed, the horizontal ones had two. Also, the vertical boiler engines were designed to run boiler trailing. When they put the horizontal boiler in, they left the controls where they were, so the engineer was now seated on the left.
Mik,
I was only eluding to the fact that the crankshaft the cylinders was attached to had a gear on it that drove another gear, most likely directly on the line shaft. Not necessarily though a transmission to change gear ratios. I also remember reading something similar, although for the life of me I can’t remember where.
The links I posted earlier have a fairly good amount of information on the Climax. It may have been in one of them.

You’d still only need 2 shafts like a simple gear reduction. IIRC there was a double pinion on the crankshaft that slid to engage one gear or the other?
thank you, gentlemen. that is just, what i hoped to learn.
seems, that these locos are just, what i searched for scrapbuilding my own locos.
Glad to be of assistance Korm.
Good Luck with the build/bash.

from the catalog “The Center Shaft is made of Steel, on which the main gears are fitted. Universal couplings and square line shafts connect to the trucks, permitting each truck to curve independent of the other.” On the drawing of the engine you can see the double pinion and the slider bar on the frame… but what connects to that? a lever? or are they slid by hand then tightened down with a wrench.
Mpore great info. Im still waiting for my trucks to come in. They had one truck and the other was on backorder. They said (wholesale) they should have it in a week. Ill give them anoither week then ill have to try and find another source. No one seems to have them in stock. Any ideas?
Looks like my trucks were sent out yesterday. Hopefully end of week they will be at my door and Ican get started. I also borrowed a great book “The Climax Locomotive” Great book with lots of pictures and descriptions. Too bad it cost $65 otherwise I would have ordered one. There is a large section devoted to the class A. Good reading.
Shawn, great thread. Four pages and no build started. Keep this up and you’ll reach 26 pages without lifting a knife.
(crackin up) nice going Hollywood…
I believe there is a challenge here. Well hidden, but certainly the gauntlet has been thrown. Going for number 5.
LOL I didnt think I woould get this many pages. This is good getting all this info before I start. Good news the trucks came in today. Now I can start with getting them attached to the flat car and see how thhey work.
