Chris' 2026 Mik Challenge Steampunk Whatnot

This one has turned out to be a LOT more work than i initially planned! What a mess of linkages, wires, and whatnots. The bubble cab and the trailing truck are basically ready for the paint room. Still a bit more to do on the main boiler section and the connecting plates, but it’s getting closer. The thought of painting this monstrosity is starting to worry me!

Chris, I’ve always enjoyed your designs over the years, but I think this one takes the cake. So much to love there, like the completely different cab / engine / tender segments, opposing oscillating cylinders, aquatic / sci-fi / Jules Verne theme, novel shapes & motifs everywhere…

Great work, and I’m really jazzed that you’re participating in the challenge this year!

I’m loving this build too. Where do I look for the other builds?

@Hines, here’s a few,

If you are on Facebook, I run a page called Raucous Rails where I post a lot of my stuff. I’m also putting together a YouTube channel for my trains, although I’m behind on that one.

That looks awesome Chris

My favorite Chris creation is still the Crimsom Herring, wish I had a better picture.

I had to get rid of the McDonald’s coffee stirrer oars as they just kept breaking off. But I think it’s held up otherwise through the years.

i’m not curious - i just want to know everything.

how did you make the background mesas?
tablecloth, glue and paint? or any more secret ingredients?
on what kind of framework?

thanks, korm

Those McDonald’s coffee stirrers were originally little spoons. Druggies used them to scoop out a hit of coke or speed. McDonald’s then made them flat, but it still worked to scrape out a hit. Finally they made them thinner like paddles. They didn’t work so well then. I guess the Gov’ment was satisfied.

Me too! Also….
How much of your creations are 3d printed and how much is making from scratch?

Korm, This is my recently started indoor layout. The framework is plywood on 2"x4"s. Horizontal surfaces are covered with 1" and 2" foam. Then everything got covered with paper mache’. For the final detail layer I use a paper pulp mix of my own formulation. In the wider shot, you can see the papermache’ forms before I do the pulp layer. Nothing is painted yet.

The majority of this one is 3D printed. Some new files I drew up in TinkerCAD, But a lot are from other projects as well. I’ve been doing more and more 3D printed stuff, but the vast majority of my builds are traditional model making.

thanks for the explanations.

oh, oh - indoor layouts are dangerous.
one starts building with a clear idea in mind.
trying out some little new ideas as side thoughts.
when the layout is half or two thirds done, there are soo many new ideas, that everything gets torn down for a new start with the new ideas. (i’m just “busy” tearing down my 3rd unfinished indoor layout)

have you tried a mix of sawdust/sawshavings with white glue and plaster crackfilller (+ acrylics) for a rough light-and-shade surface?

the southwest… - and i don’t see a cave for a pueblo stronghold.
(with longlegged women and strongarmed guardians)

ehem… - i think, i’m not the only one, who would welcome a thread about the build of an indoor layout…

I’m hoping to cover the layout build on my You Tube Channel.

Ok! She’s finally all put together and running very smoothly, indeed! Next stop: the paint shop. I have to say that I really am a bit intimidated by the next step. Still no idea what I’m doing!

Just awesome Chris, makes me wonder if I can swing a 3D printer setup.

Chris;

Not Steampunk, but fantasy. Thought you might enjoy some views of my hatchling dragon transport for the Brandywine & Gondor RR (the Mainline of Middle Earth). The reason the “little” guy is being fed is because male dragons are sexually mature when they hatch, and a steam locomotive working upgrade sounds a LOT like a female dragon in heat! Hatchling male dragons cannot breath fire or fly, and the females would prefer not to be incinerated in a moment of passion!
