Chevy Truck

When I go shopping at places like Walmart, or Walgreen’s, basically any store that has a toy section, I usually take a look at the die cast cars that they have. I look for everyday type vehicles, after all, how many 57 Chevys and 69 Cameros does one town need anyway? Last weekend, at Walmart, I found a 1972 Chevrolet pick up, in 1:24th scale. That is the scale I model in, and I have seen lot of those trucks around. So I bought it, and thought I would let Yunz know about it. Some folks might be interested, and other folks, well, they have probably already moved on from this thread.

This is the truck as it comes in the box

Included with the truck is an instruction sheet, a screwdriver, 2 spare axles and 4 replacement tyres.

After you throw out the instruction sheet, I would also recommend throwing out the toy screwdriver. Its totally worthless.

The truck looks nice, but old man Provost would not spend the extra money for white walls.

But he does like to keep his truck clean.

So I took the truck apart to change out the tyres, and almost immediately rounded off the toy screwdriver included in the box.

Since the bed and cab are die cast as separate parts, I can see where there could be some real kit-bash potential in this truck. When I went to change the tyres, I discovered that the other tyres are actually a different size. So I simply removed the white walls from the wheels, and turned them around.

Now that looks more like the kind of truck old man Provost would drive into town on Poker night.

For less then $20, I have another plain, ordinary, everyday vehicle to put on the streets of my towns, when I finally build my towns.

Nice truck David.

I have one from Jada, but it’s a “Showroom Floor” edition. I didn’t get extra wheels with mine.

Got a 58 Chevy Apache (Motor Max) from TSC.

I have the real ones also, but the 58 is a stepside, and the 72 is a 71.

Cool Find. I just found a gold mine for the micro which will be set in the 1920’s and is 1:24. There are several die cast banks that are early 1900s vehicles that are 1:25. Not as nice as the truck you picked up but will work well. I just bought two, a 1910 Mack Texaco truck and a 1912 JC Penny’s Ford

These are not the exact ones I bought I am waiting. Paid just under $10.00 including shipping for the Mack and $12 something for the Ford.

That is a really nice truck, and can’t beat the under $20 price. The detail is top notch. And it fits an era not often seen in the 1/24 diecast market.

My most recent find was a car I’ve been looking for a while…a Johnny Lightning 1951 Studebaker. Been waiting for a nice color, and after a few years a nice one (and affordable too) finally popped up on eBay.

Your nice Chevy pickup came with whitewalls as an option. Unfortunately the Studebaker didn’t. So I painted the tires after finding this clever YouTube video:

Gee that’s a nice car. I would nab one if I saw it, even though its not modern, it was a more common car back in its day.

is the scale difference between :24 and :29 very obvious, do you need some seperation between them if your RR is :29 for them to look right?

1:24 is roughly 15% larger than 1:29. As long as you don’t place the models close together, they will usually pass the ten foot rule.

A cool find David. It is funny that they included the big shiny rims and tires. Was there also a hydraulic kit in there to make it a low rider?

No, but I am sure it could be made into one.

The truck and Studebaker are both nice finds. Good job on those hand-painted whitewalls.

I had not checked our rotten Walmart for awhile, but did yesterday, after seeing these posts. Found a 58 Chevy convertible and an Apache pickup, just $10!. I have some of those Johnny Lightning cars also, including the Studebaker. Finally working on my A&W to set out and put some cars under the overhang.

See Jerry, sometimes Walmart does have something you want. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

I’d love one of those Studebakers. I’ve never seen one at any Walmart. If anyone spots one, let me know. Might have to beg help in getting it.

Good luck in your hunt Rich.

Not sure if they are being made anymore (Johnny Lightning is the brand). I had to get it off eBay. Took a long time for this particular turquoise color to pop up as well. Most I’ve seen are black, a light baby blue, white, or coke colors. And a lot of the ones you’ll see on eBay are crazy priced “rare” variants.

Or you can spend the big time $$$ for a Danbury Mint version. I have a few Danbury/Franklin Mint 1:24 scale cars. But they only come out to the layout for photos. Way too nice to keep outdoors.

Matt, I have a collection of Danbury and Franklin diecast Mopars, the wife asked if I will put them out on the RR, I said ONLY if they are someplace safe, away from sticky fingers and will be last out , first in when we are done. then she asked why and I had to tell her most cost $70.00 (HA) new, so the cheap Walmart ones would be better for outside, that is why they are kept in a locked glass cabinet.

Pete, I am a cheep bast person. Everything I buy has a price limit to it. If its over that limit, it really has to be something I want, or else I just don’t buy it. Automobiles have a $20 limit. I have a few that cost a bit more, but I have not purchased quite a few that I wanted, because they were much more then $20. So you will not find an $70 die cast car anywhere in my collection.

David,

Birds “cheep”. You, on the other hand as you say, are CHEAP. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Joe, ok. I am Cheap. But I aint easy. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

David,

This is a family website! (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)

Joe yes. You can take my comment any way you like. My bosses find me not easy to understand. My mom finds me not easy to understand because I take my new trains apart to “fix” them. So, not being easy could have many connotations.
