Chevy Suburban-NTOT

Any Suburban/Blazer/Tahoe/Jimmy owners out there?

We just bought a 1999 4x4…and apparently I have some sort of “leak”…the front passenger foot-well is wet, and I’ve be unable to replicate the leak…?

It’s frozen right now (carpet and pad). No smell so I don’t think it’s the heater core leaking?

Thanks

cale

AC evaporator box not draining outside? Water condenses on it and it is supposed to drain outside.

But, since it’s winter, you probably are not using AC.

I would suspect windshield leak.

Regards, Greg

p.s. about 80 degrees here today…

Heater core or evap drain pluged as Greg points out, both are common full size GM problems of that vintage.

Good purchase BTW. Last year of the real Subs.

I’ve had Chevrolet truck’s most of my driving life and the problems stated above are not uncommon.

The most troubling problem was either a small pinhole rust, or was it a screw hole in the drain in the cowl that took me forever to find.

I have had to reseal a windshield more than once. Hose it down, starting at the bottom into the cowl vent and slowly work your way up until you find more water. If it smells like antifreeze, that is the heater core.

Cale,
Congrats on the new purchase. But I must say that the Chevy’s Suburbans especially in that year are know for water leaks. I have a 87 3/4 ton 4wd that I love to death(leaks like a sive) however I recently went Toyota as I could not afford nor did I like whats out there for my needs.(kept the Burban though)
As a master mechanic with 20+ years in the industry I can say that there are many variables with your leak. Greg’s response is good if it was the middle of July but Mr Hill is pretty much spot on with finding the leak. We do have sonic transmitters that can locate them, I still prefer the old fashion way with a hose if I can. Just remember that gravity has it’s way and water will always find the lowest spot. Some of the best technicians have been plagued or fooled by water infiltration including myself.
I do not service these vehicles so I have no “tech tips” other than always check the basics such as cowl drains for restriction etc. first.
Be weary of the car repair boards as I have moderated on one for all but 10 yrs now and most are just enthusiasts with thoughts or refer to past posts . The board I do has over 20k members but less than a dozen professional technicians with real advise.
Sorry for the book and hope this helps if I can be of further assistance feel free to e-mail me and i will help if I can.

Ah, brings back long ago memories of being locked in a Mercedes, Peugeot or BMW trunk with a flashlight while my boss blasted the rear end of the car with a hosepipe… Plugged sunroof drains or bad tail light to body gaskets were the majority of problems.

VERY true David as far as forms. The membership of many of the car boards make the model railroad board members all look like master modellers. Some boards are better than others, the Merc and Volvo boards are good, but when you get down into the Asian stuff, there are some real “gems” on those. There was a guy on a Honda board that decided he wanted to order for his Civic a long block instead of a short block for his car. Why?..(wait for it)…“for more torque” of course!

What gets me are these same just-post-bubescent tribal tatoo covered cheeba monkeys will poo poo any info provided by an actual mechanic or tech.

Go ahead and slap that chrome fart can under your car with a turbo blow off valve…then I can hear how slow your car really is as I sit on my back deck, drink beer and run my trains.

Like David, I’ve been driving Chevy trucks all my life.
Check for rust around the bottom of the windshield pillar.

Another thought. Was it wet when you bought it? If so, maybe a window was left open.

Nah, no fart cans. That is a new board by me, the Bricks board is good for tech info.

My last Volvo (1968 144S) had an early B20B block with B20E head, with double valve springs, hollow push tubes, R grind cam, headers and a pair of 40mm DCOEs feeding it. Was not quiet and not a good street car.

My daily car of the time was a 1966 122S wagon with a B20B with re-jetted and rebuilt HS6 SUs, M41 gearbox and a 4.56 rear end. It would do 110 MPH with ease. Great interstate car, if you did not mind driving with the heat on during the summer.

Sold all the old cars, quit working on them for a living and got back into trains.

The brick board sucks(unless you need info on what you have/had) The Volvo name right now (IMO) is riding off the coat tails of the past. Ford is doing incredible as an American company but they should have purchased Volvo as it is instead of playing with it, however I don’t know what was dumped into their lap as new owners. Can assure you they need a good programmer to write proper software so guys like me can read and understand it unstead of this propertiary right protected crap…this mentality is going by the wayside. My daily driver is a 92 240 with 340k and change on the clock and have modded 850’s but the new stuff is trash compared to the real Swedish cars…I still fix’em for a living though as I have a hobby to support!

and a new radiator!

Noticed yesterday am that the truck was leaking coolant while idling in the drive, after a quick trip to the PO, noticed even more. Parked it, got the Diesel warmed up and headed off to the parts house. Priced a new radiator and hoses, it was near $240…called a buddy of mine (still in the car biz and explained problem)-he referred me to local shop I didn’t know existed…they replaced the radiator (with new unit) and hoses for $268 with warranty in 3 hours!!! blew me away, best $28 dollars I’ve spent in a LONG time  Edit: failed to mention-one tank on the old unit was leaking pretty bad, and other side appeared to be not too far behind!

oh and paid my property taxes yesterday. $66.00!!! if we’d kept the Honda Van (Lease turn in) the total owed was $348, plus the monthly payments…I was happy to replace my radiator yesterday!

But did that fix the inside water leak? What no Cale doing an elf dance?

well David, since you asked for it:

I’ll bet you have to push a wheel barrow every place you go

Did it fix the internal leak?

not sure, it’s just now beginning to thaw…I’d doubt though, it appears the leak is on the windshield or firewall away from radiator…

Thanks, Cale, now I’ll carry that image in my head for the next few days!

Sorry to hear that, I used to lurk there a few years ago helping with some 740/240 stuff. I guess now that the 850s and S70s are getting cheap…

My director at work has a 940 turbo with well over 300K on it, and the assistant has a 740 Turbo with 300K that looks like a three year old car. He has also bought two 240 wagons in the past year, both with well over 200K on them, one that had all the hard stuff done (blower, wiper motor, rebuilt suspension, new clutch, etc) and 10 years of records for $1200, nothing wrong but shot clear coat on the roof.

The Volvo 240/740/940s in no way will compare to the new stuff as you point out. My former boss loves the new ones tho, keeps the lights on and the bills paid! I first realized this when I got behind the wheel of an 850 when they were new…

Garrett,
I was ticked off with the 850’s(change too front drive 5cyl) when they came out in 1993 but realize they were the last of the “Real Indian’s”
P.S… The 16v 2.3 900 series was the platform of development for the 850’s side windin’ 5cyl. which has weak rods not capable of handling over 20psi of boost on a charged motor.

Cale, my sister had one that leaked like that. The mechanic went through everything above with no luck. It turned out she had a clogged drain in the vents right below the windshield it was full of pine needles.
