Challenger Bash from two Pacifics

Thanks guys. Not sure of the weight, but it is heavy. I used the weights that came with the Pacifics I bashed, so about twice what one of them weights, I would say. I got the cow catcher done last nite. Used the one from the Pacific as a base(cut off the uprights, except for the sides), added a top and middle triangle the size of the bottom shape(also filled it in). I then put in some plastic uprights, filling between with some channel that I had filed a curve into. Screwed right back into the old holes. Came out pretty close.

It just gets better and better Jerry. I hope someday I have half the talent you do. Excellent work!

Thanks Will,
Still working out a few problems, but I’m sure it will be fine in the end. Glad you made it through the storms okay.

Jerry, that’s a nice choo choo!

Thanks Jerry ^^ The storms were rough. I’ll be making a pilgrimeage to St. Louis soon to see BigBoy in person. I’m planning the trip with quite a few railbuffs. Then I need to see Challenger in person and I’ll be a happy man. But yours is real nice to see running in the meantime. Keep up the good work!

Chall is running east to Omaha on 19 June.

Except for some weathering and a few minor details the Challenger is pretty well finished. Had a good time making it, was much more of a project than I envisioned. Had to keep changing the plan as I went along, but it was fun solving the problems, which is what I like about modeling.

Loco is 32" long tender is 18"

I made the tenders side frames from 3 layers of 1/16" plastic. The journals were made as a master and I cast all of them. Front truck on the tender is a USA Big Boy.

Jerry I am pulling this one back up to ask if you have planes for this? or did you just wing it from pictures?

If anyone has plans for a Challenger could you let me know. I’m thinking about having one built for me and I need a set of plans for them to fallow. thanks

Geoff
I have the line drawing out of the Steam Locomotive Encyclopedia
I’ll try to copy it but it’s on a 2 page spread.
Rodney

Rodney,
These plans are for the ride on size, but he will make them to any size you want. I had him make me 1/29 plans for 844 and the Challenger and the tender. I just got the side views and went from there. You can get Boxpox wheel castings from Roberts Lines, but I guess you’ll make your own!

Nice guy to deal with. The smaller plans are cheaper also.

My Challenger runs nice and smooth. I took out the gears in the front drive and went with a Delrin sprocket and chain setup. Gears were noisy.

Ew! I like the wrinkles in the tender, that looks more like the prototype not a model. Good work, Jerry. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Ric,
I re-did the tender, now it’s smooth! Sorry!

Are the real ones smooth? The ones I’ve seen have wrinkled under the stress of the weight.
