Thanks CHuck. WIth no hobby shops around, a guy has to use what he can find.
Looking great and I love the scavenging and creative use of what’s at hand.
Can I suggest a name for the side of the cab:
U. R. KNUTS
Love it

Hi Bart,
Got the idea online someplace, maybe you? Store had some really thin ones, one was thicker/bigger, it’s the one I bought, $7. Should have looked at Walmart today, I guess!
Pick up some old campaign signs for free. Lots of difference thicknesses. that should be right up you alley for cheap Jerry. HeHe. Later RJD
Great job Jerry! I saw the tender but haven’t seen the locomotive yet. I can’t wait to see it completed and running. Keep your fans updated

Thanks guys. Been busy running trains, did get some embossed metal on it. Best bet is craft foil, you get better relief than the adhesive backed metal duct tape. That 3M glue is pretty nasty stuff though.

Whoops
DId some more to the Challenger. I used metal duct tape that is adhesive backed, for the silver boiler parts. You can emboss some simple patterns in it, but it is pretty thin. The narrow copper strips are adhesive backed from a roll of that I had on hand. All this will get painted later.

I re-did the top of the form in front of the cab, had tried embossing it, but it did not come out too well.

The cab roof is embossed craft foil that I glued on. It is thicker and you can get more detail in it.
Very cool. Keep the pics coming.

Jerry, are you concerned at all about paint not sticking to that metal tape? I have a bunch of that stuff I used for shielding guitar electronics, and it’s very slick. I’m thinking about stealing that technique with the ponce wheel and the metal duct tape
If an etch primer was used then the overlying coats of paint should stick.
I’ve used the foils before and had no problems, I do primer them first. Used some copper foil on my old McKeen car 15 years ago and it’s still fine. Got more done on the Ch. I got some good pix of a MTH Chall details from Ray and put them to good use on the tender and the loco. Here’s the sand domes. I used some heavier copper foil so I could get more relief in the embossing.

I tried them out on the C and thought they looked okay.

I worked on the trailing trucks today, used two Pacifics glued together and formed somewhat to the C look, still some left to do.

Sure having fun, helps beat the winter doldrums! Jerry
Got a bit more done to the C. Mostly been figuring out the pipe work. Had to drop the drive units another 1/4" to make room for the piping, that makes a 3/4" drop total. I used some of the mounting holes that were molded into the Pacific boiler shell, just added a 3/4" piece in. The Challenger has long rods running from the back driver, so I moved the pacific’s center driver to the rear and fabbed up some new rods. Big rod I just cut the Pacific rod in half, sanded the pieces some to fit in the rectangle brass piece and bolted them in with 00-80 bolts. The shorter rod I just cut off some pieces from brass tubing and soldered them to a brass rod.

I wanted the Challenger to have smoke out each stack. I got a newer Aristo smoke unit and found an old Pacific stack in my parts I took off for my bash. It had two tubes leading up to the stack, I flipped it over and glued it to the newer smoke unit. Threads up to the stack fine, so back to work!

After a lot of work, I got the Challenger front drive done. It pivots under the boiler, so the cylinders and the front frame and valve gear had to be fastened to the front drive. The front pilot fastens to it also. I added a brass strip(painted black here) from the top of the motor block to right under the cross brace on the cylinders, the cross braces for the cylinders fasten to it to keep it rigid. The valve gear is attached a bit further back. Since I had moved the Pacific’s center driver to the rear position I had to lengthen the rods, this made the gear look much more like a Challengers, as close as I plan to get anyway!

I got some of the C pipework done. I used 3/8" copper tubing. I got some pipe fittings from my refrigeration guy, hardware store did not have them that small. I made up some flanges from Ozark bolt heads, used a nylon washer to attach them to, then molded/cast them. They are the white items. LONG ways to go yet, but so does winter!

keep up the good work and … HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Thanks Jack, got some money to buy train stuff! Here’s a video of a test run I made today. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sv6lynGO08o Yesterday, it derailed quite a bit, found it was out of gauge, so fixed that, today’s run went fine, then it suddenly started twisting, so may have a bind someplace, back to the workbench!
