Large Scale Central

Challenge Build 2013

Rushed thru with the floor joists for the 2nd floor.

Holly cr#p! I didn’t cut out the hole in the floor for the stairwell. I don’t really know where it goes, as I haven’t even drew up the plans for the 2nd floor yet. I didn’t know if I would get far enough along to tackle the 2nd floor. Cah Cah…

I know it has to go somewhere around here. I’d better draw up the plans… onward for tomorrow.

There’s a prototype for everything…Wasn’t it Nationwide that had their fancy main office about 1/3 erected when they suddenly realized that the plans didn’t have the elevator shafts lined up between floors?

A Large Scale “oops” moment.

Tom

Spent the morning with the architect and draftsman and came up with a 2nd floor plan. There will be a Large Master bedroom, and a guest room, with a shared bathroom. This is a 20’s time period home.

BTW 1/4" to the foot. Then went ahead and drew the framing details for the walls.

Time to find the Stairwell, and get the framing crew back to work…

Idea - take it outside while it’s at some of these interesting stages and grab some pix of it in a natural setting ASAP. They’ll be more fun than these workshop pix! Which are fine, but… well, you know…

Very nice job.

We are in the process of building a new house right now and go out everyday to check the construction and progress. You have nailed the construction very well except for 2 items, nothing big but might help you next time in alignment.

  1. Any wall with door openings have a base plate the full width of the wall, after all walls are up the base plate is then cut out from the door opening.

  2. Their should be a back wall to the stair well.

I have watched framers for 2 weeks now and picked up the latest techniques to keep walls square. Should work well even in our scale.

Yesterday the framers where putting in the great room main ridge beam, It consists of 3 sister-ed LVL’s 2"x 24"x24 feet and over 20 feet in the air. Talk about scary. The individual boards weight 17 lbs per foot. The whole beam calculate out to 1200 Lbs.

You got me wanting my new work shop up and running now.

Keep us posted.

Corrected numbers.

Hey Gang… In Las Vegas at world Furniture Market for Ashley corp. training, and etc. Got a few minutes to post a bit of update.

Got the outside wall framed before leaving.

And a few details.

Won’t be home until wed. night…

Looking good Dave.
I wonder is this house a replica of yours or just a house? I once built a little house for my layout that looks like my house. That would be neat if you were doing the same.

I can’t wait to see how you “rough in” the wiring and the plumbing.
And it’s convenient your at a Furniture show. You can pick out what you’ll need for your new house…

Dave I think I had that same crew on one of my construction projects a few years ago, they seam to consider to blueprints mearly as “suggestions” LOL

@Todd Not my own little house… Mine would be to booooring… But I have already told the wife that there will be one jest like ours on the pike… And you can dam well be assured it will NOT have a single stud or fire block in it, nor have shake shingles no matter how much John tries to chide me into it.

That door and toilet is a hoot. Reminds me when my Mom had a garage built, the builder was proud to show it to her, opened the side door and wham it hits the garage door track. OOPS so that is why the door was supposed to be at the far end. The door now opens out.
Sounds like all the little studs and blocks are getting to you?

Yeah home again. Gonna evaluate whats left to do and prioritize what will get done… I can only imagine what my in box looks like at work :-(.

Okay, as a (retired) certified IBC building inspector, I will have to place a Stop Work Order on this building until I see the proper building permits posted on site.

The framing work looks very good so far. You will need diagonal corner bracing or plywood sheathing on your exterior walls and bridging on your floor joists.

I can’t wait to see the electrical wiring rough-in

Electrical and drywall! The owners want to move in!

Hey Dave, you should reduce and print out Davids “STOP WORK” notice and stick onto the front door of the model, that would be a really funny final detail

WOAAAAA, Now guys… Wireing will be done after the framing is done… But I have NO INTENTIONS of ever finishing the framing, as this is to be a building in progress, I might consider it if someone can come up with a right angle drill that will fit between the studs and an auger to fit! It is hard enough to get the blocking put in.

You just don’t like to hang drywall!

I have hung drywall in a real 16ft across ROUND room with 12ft celings, 2 layers of 1/4" soaked in water to get them to bend. Overlapping the joints by 2 ft for each layer. I really don’t mind the hanging, But don’t ask me to tape & Texture… Ain’ta Gonna Happn

Imaging hanging that ceiling with plaster and lath. Keep us posted with progress pics. It reallly looks good.

I’ll have to try a scale house build myself to go with my barn. What specie wood was that you started with?
