I don’t know about the “smart” part it was more out of neccessity. Using my design you could always go bigger.
I was trying to figure out an unrelated problem, when I ran across something that might be of interest for modelling your cables. Its a product called “gossamer thread.” It looks like it has a twist to it, like any other thread (or steel cable), but it’s also stretchy. It comes in a variety of colors… might be worth looking into.
Thanks Burl for the tip , i’ll have to Google it and check it out .
I thought Gossamer only came in red?
Rooster, no, gossamer thread comes in all kinds of colours. Some are rather pretty too.
I was wondering if anyone can tell me how the cable ends are secured into the slot on the real car ? Is there a short piece of chain fastened to the end of the cable? Are there any other things on the cable between the winch and cable end ?
hi
Google centerbeam flat car and look at the pics
there are several different types

Great . I found this site on the web. I now have those questions answered . https://youtu.be/1ThSD2795jA
That was interesting.
Just to throw it out there braided fishing line is great stuff twisted and comes in a wide variety of diameters. Not stiff so that may be an issue. That precision cable looks great.
Mike I cannot remember how the ends are fastened to the car, will look and see if I have a picture that might help, I do remember all cables had a corner iron, a piece of angle iron to keep the ends from cutting into the wood , If I can in the next few days I will attempt to get a picture for you , saw some empty cars today and remember how the cables were strung when empty to look nice and neat, they always liked we did that. like I said If I can I will get you some pictures in the next few weeks or so, busy and not around rail cars as much.
Yea, angle iron or something to act as edge protectors. We did the same thing with steel and aluminum coils.

Well I couldn’t decide so I had my better half toss a coin. She liked this road name cuz the dirt and rust will show up better !Still have to clear coat it and call Stan for some decals. And the winner is … .(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0709.JPG)(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0710.JPG)
It’s been almost a year and I would like to see it currently in a video with flattened wheels and crap hanging off of it!
You’re right Dave , I have been slacking off on the centerbeam car . Wow it’s been a year already , time flies . I’ll have to find my notes about the decals for it and call Stan . It will be done all weathered and rigged hopefully in the next couple of months. I might as well wait till I finish this other car i’m doing. Heres a picture of it and my new car as of today . just awesome work. But I am afraid you will be dead by the time you make 20 of each. After all you never see just one of either type
Actually, at the lumber yard in Elizabeth I saw just one center beam on the spur.
Maybe its just me but when I go down to my basement to work on the car my better half gets mad if I spend all night down there and not with her so I do it in short spurts. If I tried to do 20 of them i’d be a single guy again. It takes me about 2-3 months of off and on work to build a car and i’d like to complete at least 2 a year. Maybe i’ll get more casting resin and start doing these 53’ mill gons again . I have built one before from start to finish in a single day right down to the clear coat including casting the pieces.(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/IMGA0230.JPG)
