Building a construction site

One of the things that can be tough is the whole selective compression thing. But I’ve come up with an idea that makes me feel pretty good. This one is a big construction site. The hard part will be decent weathering on the these new vehicles. The easy part is no roads or buildings to model, although a site trailer would be nice. 1:25th scale by First Gear…hard if not impossible to find construction site stuff in 1:32…which would have been closer to 1:29 but this works for me. Also have a scraper on the way. Need to buy a bunch of 1:24 or 1:25 figures though…don’t expect that will be easy but gotta have them or all I’ll be able to do is take late night after work shots. Got enough trains for now so spending the $$ on scenery.

Got a kink in the track to fix but the siding is for the gons with the pipe loads. SInce this is a state job the work will never be finished…kinda like the 13 billion$$$$ Big Dig we got up here

Looks like a good idea and good start

You need a state vehicle with the Inspector sleeping in it.

Don’t forget the railroad foreman in his RR issued truck sitting all day working the Form B. Then you can make up some red flags on each end of the construction site, and few ‘miles’ away a yellow/red flag. Anytime someone works within 50’ of the right of way they have to have a MOW foreman set up a form B. Some of these can last for years, nice retirement jobs for the old heads that can hold them.

Ya you also need the 6 workers all standing around the one guy working. The six all have to be leaning on their shovels.

Larry. Nice equipment. I ran an international 530 loader for a while. It was a miserable two stick beast but it did a good job for the town. Since you have a pipe layer in the mix there, is this some sort of drainage or water pipe job? I came up with a Corp of engineers remediation construction site on my layout . Gives gravel hoppers a place to deliver. Story is a slate quarry needs to be pumped of water and filled with gravel to make safe. Provides a place for a couple pieces of equipment to be placed and some interest. Good luck, hope to see some following pics of your beautiful layout.

Thats neat Larry , please do not forget a port-a-john , and the office box on wheels , and I thought Presiner [spelling ?] made some good workers , some even have radios in hand . A neat scene all in all though . Some of the figures I used

Perfect people.

Those vehicles are all too clean and bent-free! Did the Construction Co. just buy them ?

Larry have you checked into the New Bright line?

Rooster’s got a good point- check New Ray. They have a 1/32 dump truck, cement mixer, back hoe, and even a garbage truck.

All good ideas, many thanks. Yep just bought the stuff for the company. Making stuff look old will take awhile. Love them there hard hat people…did you say they were Preiser peeps?? Dennis

Now just hold on a minute there. What you need is a local plans and permits office, a 1:20 scale red tag, and a crowd of protesters. THAT would make it a real construction site.

But that’s just it…it’s not real  Sooooooo…I can do what I want…

I think Woodland Scenics has a few sets of workers that might fit
Striking Picketers - G Scale A2557
Rail Workers - G Scale A2562
Sam Supervisor - G Scale A2525
Doug and Phil Shoveler - G scale A2533
Hilow Brothers Surveying - G Scale A2556

And some more items seen at construction sites

As with all WS products check size. They vary widely.

Oh wait, you cannot use those picketers. They are not paid to … scale!

What would be most realistic, at least around here, is a construction site devoid of people and equipment. :stuck_out_tongue:

Coffee truck!

Ooooh I like that idea …a roach coach

Thanks Roger.

. . . And some guy in his PJs laying down in front of a bulldozer or front end loader - like Arthur Dent in the movie “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Universe”

Great stuff!

Have fun,
