I gotta admit, building this boiler has been kicking my butt. So far this has been the most frustrating part of the build for me. But I am trying to get through it. I did learn to fill the gaps with acrylic nail polish mixture, which provides a very hard surface and when sanded gives great results.

Amazing how things work out. We had a plumbing problem in our kitchen last night which I repaired today. As for the locomotive, I was still struggling with the right size diameter pipe for the smokebox. I had a piece to small in diameter and a piece to big. Lo and behold sitting in the vice was the extra pipe I had to cut to repair the plumbing problem. It was the perfect diameter. So I was able to spend this evening working on the smokebox. I am one happy camper right now.

Today I added more detail to the smokebox. I wasn’t happy with my initial design of the tender so I took it apart and am starting over. It’s time to sit in the pondering chair.

Tommy it is looking great, the only thing I would do to the tender is remove the front upper angled strip (flange) so that water has a place to run off right now you have the start to a mighty find pond, LOL, Bill
Might I dare offer a suggestion?
I’d remove the front wall of the fuel box. The stack says wood burner, so little will roll about. I’d make a free standing water tank about the size of your hatch with open areas on either side for wood and in front of the tank and on top after a fill up… I think the big box should be as wide as the deck too.
Though a saddle tanker, it does show an open fuel area…

I’ve wanted one of these engines (and the kit) for 10 years…of course they weren’t offered by then. Still want one now so I am enjoying watching the build progress…and am cursing you at the same time. Sending email to Hartford to see if the parts are still available and what it will cost. Fingers crossed…
Ask for Phil at Hartland Locomotive Works, I believe he put the parts together for those kits. I’m not sure the locos that supplied the parts are still made.

Here is the Hartland original parts sheet that came with the kit. I agree with John, call Phil. I talked to him about a month ago when I ordered the “Inyo” smoke stack I am using in my build.

You should telephone, HLW is very poor at returning emails, better to talk to Phil directly. He’s way more responsive.
And he is much cooler on the phone than through emails too.
I trimmed the front lip off the tender and used that piece to frame in the hatch.

Got a hold of Phil and the parts are still available. In a very short time, my kit will be on its way. It costs $243.50 but that is still a deal since it has been 15 years since the original kit was out. I’m just happy to be able to get the parts.
