Build Log: The CVSRy's replica log cars

Jon, A close up of my cars, made from a Don Winters’ kit:

These were cast parts, but if I were doing it on the cheap, I’d sure be looking at some styrene I-beam from Plastruct. I’d cut some thick styrene strips at an angle for the end parts. Head over to Michael’s and get some rings to hold the chain - or bend your own from brass rod. A few bucks and you’d be able to do your whole fleet.

Thanks guys. Both the Ozark kit and Don Winter’s kit model a metal bunk. My prototype car, and what I’ve built have a wood timber bunk. I’m really just looking for a spike, or a good idea on how to simulate one. I’ve got ideas on how I’m going to to attach the chains.

Jon try calling ozarks. Maybe he will sell you just the small end piece wedges.

What piece do you want to make/simulate Jon?

You can cut wedges from basswood with a mitre box and razor saw. Boring, but not hard.

conical spikes? Have you considered those little bits of sprue from where the parts used to be attached on a plastic model kit?

Jon anymore updates on the log cars? I just recieved 3 pair of AMS trucks from a member here that I bought from him and thinking they woul be great candidates for log cars.

I finished staining a set of 4, then the weather turned nice so I’ve been outside playing with trains

Yes, the AMS trucks would be great. I haven’t updated the drawing with the changes I made during the build. If you need the plan I’ll update it for you. The only change was space between sills is now equal to one sill width and the bunks have dado cuts for the sills allowing them to sit lower and reinforce the frame.

That would be great Jon. Although I plan on making a somewhat longer car ala westcoast dimensions. But like you I will have to figure out the details with body mounted couplers.

Page 7?

Maybe

Or not.

How many pages does it take to make skeleton cars??

Probably about 20. The less complicated the project, the more time it takes

You know when you ask John this and if it's done yet he get's confused!! Sean

P.S. Is it done yet!!

…grinning…

Weather has really put the brakes on the car project. I’m really enjoying getting outside and working in the yard. Even managed to start a new siding today.

Yep, ya got the siding ‘planned’ and then you and the beers had to babysit the fire pit.

Hard to fight the pull to get outdoors. Hope you enjoyed it
Ralph

While the sun was shining today I decided to take the stained frames outdoors for a color check. I really think they are too black, but they look much better in sunlight than indoors. The sticks are to hold the trucks and the frames are resting on the trucks…

So, should I try and lighten them up, or just keep moving forward?

…grinning…

I would keep moving forward Jon but I do like the lighter grays. Maybe a little time running the in the summer sun will lighten the darker bits? Besides you got to get them built so I can copy them for these 3 pairs of Accucraft trucks that I got.
