Large Scale Central

Build Log, Babs River Railway

So last weekend I did some more dirt rearranging, and made this riverbedand then got some track to see how they fit across the gap, I have since raked all the rocks up to dig out the banks a little more vertical, and also a little deeper and wider

view from the inside veiwing area to the east. checking to see how big of a trestle/bridge will be need for the reverse loop to diagonally cross the river on its way back to the left.

So with a day off last Monday I decided to get some track plop it down and dig out all my rolling stock to see what it looked like on the rails. This is a static display only, rails were barely connected together, this was just to see what it would look like If it was actually working

The rest of my rolling stock, including the LargeGiantBig caboose, which doesnt look as out of place by some flat cars, but get it near anything else and… oh well thats another story. Anyway, all 16 cars and one locomotive makes a longer train than I thought I had. Not close to being able to say I will be running trains soon, but this got me excited to getting more done. The flagstones are standing up to see how they would look as potential mountain retaining walls for tunnels in that area. Noticed today I did not make any provisions for electrical wiring to get from nearest plug into layout so some extra digging will be required for power to be out where its needed.

Another “problem” surfaced when I set everything out for this picture, I have USA, AristoCraft, Bachmann and hook and loop couplers mixed in all the cars, and some plastic wheels, so a lot of standardization will need to be done, or several cars will need to be made into transition cars so the whole train can roll down the track together.

Better to pick a standard coupler now, rather than make a bunch of transition cars that will not only limit your car placement but complicate operations if any. Also as you buy cars you will be able to include the coupler price in the cars price instead of having to bulk buy to be able to run your trains. IMHO(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

I agree. I put off standardizing on one coupler when I started, and the transition to all KaDee was a pain. Now when I buy a car, it gets converted to metal wheels and KaDees before it ever runs on the railroad.

Now, Pete, if you hadn’t told everybody that the trains were just static displays, we would have all assumed that you were actually running trains as you laid track (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif). I know what you want for Christmas … for next years challenge to have something to do with building bridges. Layout is looking great. Thanks for sharing the update.

Agreed…Would also recommend hard soldering the brass rail as well.

Dan, when I get something actually moving under it’s own power on the track I will attempt to post a video and there will be a celebration !! Do guess I could lay some straight track and go back and forth a bit!

Is it done yet ? Image result for Poking a Bear with a Stick

Just now catching up to this Pete. Looking great. My back is sore just remembering all the fill I moved with a shovel and wheel barrow. I feel for yeah. And compaction is key. I compacted mine and it still has settled almost an inch in places. I willbe eagerly watching.

Sean, no it’s no where near done, if I had not cheaped been thrifty buying the unscreened dirt I could be a little further along. And this silly thing called “work” seems to really interfere with my time to do rr stuff

Well I got tired of moving dirt and rocks around so I decided to move some stone and blocks around for a change. To get some rough ideas on where the tunnels will be and how they will look I got my non award winning Mik’s Challenge tunnel portal out and drug some blocks and some flagstone over to see what a tunnel might look like in the area it might be. The track on the right will have its own tunnel and portal, but back from the one I set up. This was just to visualize how things might be, I will belining the tunnel bottom with either red bricks or cement step blocks, just to keep rabbits from trying to make a home inside, plus they will not be real long, for same reason.

the inner track will curve tight to the mountain, The gnome type thing will probably not stay there, behind the stacked rocks and will be the reverse loop when finished. Second track will come on this side of the 2 rocks, crossing the riverbed on wall block abutment next to the 2 rocks, on a small older bridge I got some time ago. It doesnt quite look the part and will have a limited life span on the layout.

. The last 2 tracks are the main line and siding that will cross the riverbed on a yet to be built double track bridge, I have some good ideas on what to build, I just need to get to the point where I need to build them.

CFO/SHMBO/wife/supporter of my crazy ideas and I had a meeting today on what happens next and how the budget will respond to my wants and wishes and we came to the conclusion I need to work more!! lol. We are on the same page and at her work she proudly shows people pictures of our progress. I get the feeling that when we announce that trains are running I will be dealing with a crowded back yard.

That portal looks as if it was built for that exact spot. You’re going to have a good looking RR when you’re done, Pete.

Nice impression of what is to come Pete. Now that the plan is started when is the open house ?(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Nice try David, I am not giving y’all ammo to blast me with. Only after things are ready will I announce a date for an open house! I saw how nice you were with Devon!!!

I’ve got to warn you, now that you are hoping to tame the landscape; rocks move.

Oh sure you think they will stay where you put them, but I must warn you. Turn your back and watch out…

Hmmm … Pete did you notice that Devon is getting more work done that you …(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

ouch!!!

Sean, I don’t think that is the case at all. The last few pages and pictures say I have done quite a bit. What have you done lately???

Pocked @ You and Devon …

Get to work Pete… Image result for poking a stick @ a bear

O Ya … Rotator Cuff surgery … (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

I love a good poking. . .with a stick you pervert Rooster.

Sissy stuff. . . all kidding aside my dad had that done and I will gladly take two brain surgeries over your one rotator surgery. He was in a lot of pain for a solid month. Hope you mend fast buddy.
